Öhlins vs KW

Had my 2016 V60 RD now for about 20 months, have decided to keep it for another 3 years, instead of it returning after 36 months. I rarely use it, bout 400km a month. But since i'm keeping it i decided to treat it with a few goodies. Got at set of second hand Polestar winglets from a wrecked S60 , ordered the Polestar Performance exhaust and intake kit and the Polestar Performance 19" wheels two days ago. Looking for a second hand rear wing, but still quite rare. Will have to order a brand new one if i cannot find a second hand piece.

I'm quite disappointed with the RD chassis, i looked into getting the Öhlins kit but since mine is a manual T4 FWD im a bit concerned it will sit a bit to high. Im guessing the springs from the VEA Polestar will still make the car sit to high and there is not way to adjust the ride height.

I read about the KW 3 kit and im curious about hearing your experience with the Öhlins and KW kit

Interesting that you could get a T4 RD in Sweden - ours is also a 2016 V60 RD and has one of the last T6 3.0 with P* tune (does yours, and what HP/torque?)
We love it, despite burning almost 13 l/100km in winter commuting in Toronto. Summer on the expressway is closer to 8 l/100km with the cruise set at 120 km/h. Have put 65k km on it in 25 months.
Anyway, the suspension is in many ways an improvement from our previous V70R and it’s harsh 4C Monroe shocks, but it’s much more GT than bracket-racing. I gather the adjustable Ohlins are 75% of the big improvement in the full P* model but they are frighteningly expensive and you still have a heavy GT wagon (“kombi”) that just goes around corners very well.

In Sweden you could tick the RD-box for basically any engine, mines a VEA T4 190bhp and they are pretty rare over here, mostly Diesels and T3s. Volvo stopped offering all petrol engines except the T3 last year in the S/V60 series. D4s are still the most popular engine choice over here. T5s and T6s are quite rare and has to do mostly with the high benefit value of these cars, which is basically a tax that the Swedish IRS calculates for every single car each year, it only effects business leasing however, like myself.

For the new VEA T3s and T4s there is no Polestar tune available, and i honestly doubt they will ever release one. For petrol engines they seem to now focus on tunes for the T5 and T6. There is however a Swedish tuning company, BSR, which raises the power to 236bhp and 360nm. But it will of course void any Volvo warranties.

As for the suspension i found a few second hand Öhlins kits from the breakers, about €2 000 for all four shocks and springs. The KW kit is roughly €1500 over here.

I have the KW V3's and absolutely love the handling difference it makes. I'm sure the lowered ride height obviously contributes to the performance gain even though I have them set to their highest ride height. If it was any lower it would be a real pain to live with day to day in the city where there are lots of speed bumps, parking lot ramps, etc. I do have a leak in one of my front coilovers (probably due to the harsh winters/heavy use of road salt here in Ottawa) that I will get replaced soon (need to go through KW customer service first. We'll see how that goes.). I know KW has a good reputation for quality so I was a bit surprised and disappointed to have an issue.

All that being said, I still love the KW's and would purchase them all over again. However, if money is no issue, I think I would go with the Ohlins. I never heard a bad thing about them during my coilover research and they were my number one choice, but I just couldn't justify the extra cost of them to my wife! Lol

Hi and welcome! Your V-RD looks really good! If you have the cash, get the Ohlins for the optimum combination of handling and compliant ride, but I'm not sure about the ride height from the Polestar FWD springs? Maybe a set of H&R or Eibach spring mated with the Ohlins is better? You won't be as slammed to the ground as the KW's, but so low and harsh (KW's) may not be the best for Swedish conditions. Check out our Polestar forum for many Ohlins owner experiences. The Bilstein shocks and Eibach spring kit is a very good and lower cost option.

Keep us updated on your progress! :)
