I live in a state that doesn't require a front plate. I have previously used bumper plugs (from bumperplugs.com) for a Porsche that I had, and was impressed with the quality and paint matching. In looking into their options for Volvos, it specifically mentions that if your car is newer than 2019, you'll have jacknuts which you need to take to the dealership to remove before installing the plugs.

Has anyone done this? Or, alternatively, has anyone been able to remove the jacknuts without damaging the bumper?

I can't help you, I don't know what jacknuts are, maybe an insert? Can you take a picture of your car?
I've plugged holes myself on 2 cars. I just bought plain black plugs locally, sanded them smooth, painted with touch up paint, sanded smooth, and clear coated, looked great, and cheaper than bumperplugs.com

I had a SLK350 with 7, yes SEVEN (Maybe 5?) holes in the front, 3 for the frame, and 4 plate screws that went through everything.

After (yes totally covered with bugs, this was on a 3500 mile road trip around/through the great lakes)

The below pic is for a 2014 XC90. The same type of #20 is used on your car. I do not have a parts picture of your bumper. #20 is similar as #26. The inside of the nut spreads out to lock onto the inside of the bumper plastic. I have never seen a dealer removal tool for #20. You will need to check with your local dealer to see if something like #18 is available. Another option is, Call any local dealership, ask for the sales dept. Try to get the name of the bumper, paint, body dent fixer guy. They are really good at repairing plastic bumper holes, dents, scratches ect. Thy can repair/paint a small section like factory new. You will never know that it was repaired.

I used them for my XC90. I think I may have had Jack nuts because the plugs didn't sit flush in the holes. I trimmed the length of the plug down and glued them in. No issues.

I like this option, if anyone has done this, and it lasts, please post.

Check your car first. It's true Volvo start shipping front plates with the jacknuts, it doesn't mean that's always what's used. The cars ship with no holes in the bumper. We normally install screws, but in PA front plates aren't required, so it's not like we put them on every car, just when a customer requests. The nuts leave a hole bigger than bumperplugs fill.

I have given up caring myself... when I get a car with a front plate, I just find something interesting to put there. My S60 has a Swedish license plate, my XC70 has a picture of a moose. Bumperplug paint matching was always great, but I never liked the way they looked.

Get a body shop to plastic weld them closed and repaint the surface, best way to do it, don’t mind the bugs lol just took her out for a long drive. I used to have a front license plate and my body guy used a plastic welder holding up strong 2 years later

Hey everyone. Attached are two pictures.

- The first is a close up of our new 2025.5 XC90 (Onyx Black) bumper with the jack-nuts installed.

- The second shows the result of me using black gloss vinyl to cover them.

I cut the vinyl into 20mm diameter circles, placed over the jack-nut, applied heat from a heat gun, formed with a simple forming tool and trimmed. Result is really good and didn't cost much. The nice thing is that it forms around the sides of the jack-nuts as these sit about 2mm proud of the bumper.

Here's a link to the vinyl I used. It matches pretty well to the 'Onyx Black' of the car.

Good point about the color.
I’d actually bought the vinyl for a different job so had leftovers to work with.
There are other vinyl sizes available that come in around $10 and i think plenty of colors too.
The bumper plugs come in about $35 and have lots of color options: BumperPlugs for Volvo

Unfortunately these only work on flush holes. So I guess the options for those with jacknuts are:

1 - drill them out and use bumper plugs or patch+paint

2 - bumper plugs and accept the gap between the plug and bumper

3 - vinyl if the color matches.

Were the jack-nuts factory installed or by the dealer? I requested my dealer not to drill into the front bumper to mount the front license plate when my XC90 arrives.

good move

i ordered bumper plugs for my new to me xc90 before i bought it - they work/look great and the paint match for osmium was perfect
(have them on my electric silver car too successfully)

They are installed by the dealer. I live in a state without front plates but we are surrounded by dumb two state plates so whenever we dealer trade cars in they have the front bracket installed.
