Update 2.2, but no CarPlay

Updates in software V2.2
  • Reduced rate of false “no entry” traffic sign alerts.
  • Improved compatibility with iPhone, including wireless charging.
  • Drivetrain optimisation adjustments.
  • Note: This software version contains a late-detected error that may affect some vehicles. The side mirrors may automatically tilt downwards when selecting Reverse, in vehicles where the “mirror tilt in reverse” setting is set to OFF. To revert to normal position when in Reverse, double-press the L and R mirror adjustment buttons in quick succession and the mirrors will revert to original position. Volvo is working on corrective actions with top priority and we apologies for the inconvenience.

That's exactly what I'm seeing under "release notes" on my B5 Momentum (I'm currently on 2.1).

but when I look at XC60 late 2022, CarPlay is there.

The UK website doesn't show it, there's no CarPlay for either version

But in other EU countries (Germany, Austria, Croatia) the upgrade is as follows

Software Updates V2.2
  • Introduction to the Apple CarPlay option .
  • Front USB data port open for Apple CarPlay connectivity.
  • Video apps can now be used in the car when it's parked. Video apps will be available later in the Google Play Store .
  • Reduced degree of false warnings on "no entry" road signs.
  • Improved iPhone compatibility , including wireless charging.
  • Powertrain optimization settings.
  • Note: The software version contains a late-detected bug that may affect some vehicles. The side mirrors may automatically tilt down when you select reverse gear in vehicles where the "reverse mirror tilt" setting is set to off. To return to the normal position when in reverse, press the mirror adjustment buttons L and R twice in quick succession and the mirrors will return to their original position. It is Volvo's top priority to work on corrective measures and we apologize for any inconvenience.

It doesn't say that the CarPlay option is included in the upgrade, but Introduction to the Apple CarPlay option - whatever that means

sounds like they're still working on it... Sounds like this version of 2.2 isn't one to download...

It’s back in the United States! The long list of remaining bugs is sobering. And this only the bugs they’ve identified and are publicly admitting to:
  • The map view in CarPlay can at times look a bit "washed out", making some roads hard to see.
  • If the CarPlay view becomes black at any time, e.g., after changing to rear camera view, it can be restored by pressing the home button.
  • The embedded map in the driver display may on occasion not return after CarPlay is disconnected
  • The embedded map in the driver display may swipe to the right and then automatically re-appear
  • Sound may get lost, typically after being parked
  • System performance might be slow
  • System bar can in some cases be invisible
  • Problems connecting iPhone via Bluetooth

So I have 2.2 for one week now and no CarPlay. Is it something that will just get activated OTA?

As a data point, I’m in the US and got the ‘Your update’s ready to install’ notification just before 7:00pm EST tonight. I started it just after 9:30, and the update took ~45 minutes.

After the initial ‘Volvo’ boot, I confirmed the update was to 2.2 (straight from 2.0), and plugged my iPhone in - CarPlay fired up full-screen as soon as I accepted some terms & conditions.

Early 2022 XC60 B6 (R-Design, if it helps?), here.

As of yesterday, version 2.2 with the date 07/11/2022 is available

Software updates

Updated 7/11/2022

Volvo is constantly developing the in-car systems and the services offered to you. When the software in your car is updated you can have access to many new functions as well as improvements. The car's software can be updated to the latest version online or in connection with service at an authorised Volvo dealer. You will be informed in the centre display when new software is available online.

Updates in software V2.2
  • Introduction of Apple CarPlay.
  • Front data USB Port opened for Apple CarPlay connectivity.
  • Video apps can now be used in the car when parked. Video apps will be available in Google Play Store at a later time.
  • Reduced rate of false “no entry” traffic sign alerts.
  • Improved compatibility with iPhone, including wireless charging.
  • Drivetrain optimisation adjustments.
  • Note: To support this software release we need to temporarily disable sharing of information between your own car and other vehicles via our cloud service (only available in Europe, USA and Canada), if it was activated before. Any privacy settings previously made will remain when data sharing is enabled again.

This really gets me frustrated. CarPlay is a new functionality and releasing integration with so many stupid bugs is ... well.. not in par with premium brand. My past BMW had the integration smooth over wireless, you could pickup phone call, there were no issues with any "wash out".. Now we have Volvo with super hype AAOS and cannot get functionality properly integrated? I cannot pickup call on my steering wheel? Even Sensus had this integrated... Sound may get lost? Come on!

The Sound may get lost one is pretty common. Happens in my 2017 Porsche Macan. You just unplug and replug in the phone. Some of these are likely Apple issues.

I get the feeling that “Ship CarPlay by June 30 or else” was on some product manager’s performance evaluation. Pushing out CarPlay at the expense of introducing so many bugs doesn’t seem like a good plan for reducing the number of overall software complaints, but I’ll take it. The software dev team is really being extended beyond their capabilities and it shows.

I think you are ignoring the fact that Apple has to play ball too. I’m positive Volvo needs Apple’s help to resolve many of these. Apple isn’t known for their openness in sharing APIs and allowing others to customize them. Some of these are similar to issues I’ve seen in other CarPlay cars. I mentioned the loss of sound issue. In my Porsche you also can’t skip tracks through the steering wheel with CarPlay. Presumably, if it were that easy for Porsche to fix, they would have done so in the last 5 years. But even though they completely redesigned their system, new Porsches have the same problem.

So Volvo is left with a situation where they can wait to release CarPlay until Apple addresses many of these bugs, or they can release it as is and just explain that they know these issues exist. I’d rather just have it as is - if it’s too buggy, I can always just not use it.
