OK, so here is the official answer from Volvo:

The answer is that it is still being looked into. A more detailed answer can´t be given at this time. When we have a clear Yes or No this will be communicated. It serves us no purpose to withhold such information. I know the "waiting game" can be frustrating but I ask you to be patient.

Great that it is not NO yet :)
This is somewhat good new I guess..where did you get this response? Email, facebook, forum?

If they do it, they are most likely going to monetize this as they can and people (like me!) will pay for it.
I'd consider paying for an upgraded Pilot Assist, if it included better reliability as well as increased speed. Pilot Assist is very flaky for me and often disengages because it loses the road markings. Perhaps it is the crappy roads in the North East. Where ACC is a reliable feature I use almost daily, Pilot Assist is little more than a novelty at this point.

I would agree. I live in the Northeast and rarely find any extended places I can engage Pilot Assist, even when in stop-and-go traffic. But ACC rocks.

that's because our infrastructure has been underfunded for years - even painting the lines costs money - and no one wants to paint lines on crappy roads

thanks to all the anti-government folks, we can't have nice things

Here is my take on this; they can't release this feature on 2016 XC90 before the S90 is released. This is feature remains an S90 thing. Once the S90 is rolled out they will say "By the way, you can now get this on the XC90". That would be the right time to announce it, and not before the first S90 is sold.

That would make sense actually. It's been noted on the official Volvo support forum that there will be a May/June software update for the XC90 which will correspond to the S90 release. The software update will include driver profiles...not totally crazy to think it might include an upgraded pilot assist too.

Why? Its not like the S90 and XC90 are competing directly for market share. It`d be more logical though for Volvo to take its current stance to let the 2016 production units get spoken for before releasing a solid no on MY16 and making this an exclusive feature for the S90 and MY17 XC. Again conspiracy theory at best, and hoping that based off their intial plans before the xc90 launch, where SW updates would bring in newer features every year will be honored.

But previous industry trends would not catch me off guard as reason for a no can do on the update

Application of resources and priorities. The XC90 is out already and the feature has not been promised/committed yet. The feature IS promised/committed for the S90. If you don't have enough engineers to work on both, guess which one gets the attention first.

I'm a cynic as well--my first thought was that we're close enough now to MY17 that they don't want to hurt 16 sales with people deciding to just wait for MY17... Laird brings up a good point, though I would think they would at least know internally if it was doable or not.

Fingers crossed we see some sort of upgrade, even if it's just another 10mph. I love this feature--my only complaint is that when it kicks off, it does so pretty suddenly. I wish there was an audible warning before it stops, since even at 30mph, the slow down is pretty dramatic when it happens.

I would really like this update as well, though for stop and go traffic where the 30mph is not quite enough, you guys do realize that simply setting the ACC and letting it do it's thing is effectively the same thing? You just have to steer-- tragic, I know.
