Three times my XC 90 has acted up every time I drive in heavy rain. The first time it caused ABS error and car lights won't turn off, dealer said source was CEM and replaced that. They replace CEM less than a year ago.

The last two times in heavy rain, it will give me low beam error message. When I look at it, one side xenon would be on and other said DRL light is on but xenon off. When I turn off car, the DRL light won't turn off. Twice I had to unplug the headlamp from the car and wait few hours. Today, it has happened again!

Does anyone have any solutions to this issue? Thanks in advance.

Ok from my experience I also change complete CEM and problem is in black gasket rubber what cover cable harness coming inside
the CEM from top.
You need to first put away cover of widnsield plastic and on the right side just spot big rubber cover
going directly to CEM. 4 screw remove and put black silicon all around the hole and on rubber cover and place it back.
Put also some silicon on cable hole where cable going inside cover.

No more water inside CEM.
And trust me many car I saw with this problem waiting in service. When you already open
this windshield cover on the left side you can spot big hole for ventilation / AC blower. On top of this you can spot
also one black plastic cover. Pull it out - apply silicon also there and place it back. As this plastic when fall down cause
water also in passenger floor, AC blower ect...

p.s. When I had few months ago big service I open all this to check and I saw that many small tinny cables coming from left engine part in some kind of plastic black box under the windshield electrical engine or near, but in all length of windshield direction to CEM. I open this long covering plastic cable box and was full of water, debris, sand and very dirty... If you look from outside on the left side *i will made some photos tomorrow) you can spot tinny cables without any protection, not tape, nothing...than you can spot few 10 cm after on cables tape.:facepalm:Shame shame from Cable Harness factory Guangzhou China 2006 (sticker on) :D
I pull out this cable long box, clean it, use another good tape and place all around the cables visible and not visible, put some cable ties and voila.;):p

What I wont to tell: its unbelievable that Volvo didnt protect this cables as they are directly open to rain, snow, cold, hot weather. Wait tomorrow I will made an photo.

You can spot here on my car that we remove plastic windshield electrical engine cover and on the right side you can spot black cable harness going to CEM. And even in front complete black cable lead plastic what I pull out to clean and cover with tape as box is open at few places.

Thank you sir. I figured it was related to water coming in, but not sure where. When you said right side, do you mean driver side? In order for me to get inside the wiper blade gasket, I need to remove the wipers. Can you please provide instruction on how I can do that?

Greatly appreciate!

So water is going in through the big black piece of plastic that goes across the bottom of the windshield? Not the wipers?

NO. Water is coming on right or left side under the cover of windshield wipers not on wipers at all.

When you remove wipers and plastic cover you have only on the left side 1. plastic black cover on upper side covering air condition entrance on blower, you can spot blower. 2. on the right side cable harness entering in car with big black cover fixed with 4 torx screw nothing else.

On the driver side under the dashboard is CEM. From outside of the car see photo this is on right side you can zoom my photo and saw that we open
CEM cover under the cover of windshield wiper electrical motor. Yes you need to remove both wipers first, than plastic cover.

THen on the right side you can spot big black cover 4 screw torx, remove this, apply silicon all around the cover and on the place where
cover is tightening and you will not have any more water on CEM 100%.
As I write before many cars have this problem in Slovenia EU and mine too.

You can spot also black plastic cover on the left side. If this is not in place you will get also water in
left side of the passenger foot carpet. When you already open windshield cover pull out also this
plastic, apply silicon on edges where he is touching car and fix it back. Voila.

Thank you very much! I'll try it again this Friday. Having a hard time removing with wiper arms, it's stuck on there. Going to try a battery terminal lifter tool, waiting for that from online order.

When you remove wiper plastic cover of bolt, spray it with WD40 or some lubrificant and wait 20 min. Than try to move UP and DOWN just lower part
of wiper arm and you will pull it out for sure. If this not help. Look on the link again, use soft hammer.
Remember to clean good cover and put silicone on both sides. Last time I put some kind of rubber taped silicon
and no water at all. Its simple job just take a time to clean good when you lift cover. Hope that this help to you and others.

You can see on this link what water made in CEM on 2006 model.

Were you able to clean the corrosion caused by the water damage, or do you have to get a new CEM? If you cleaned the corrosion how did you do it?

Sorry for late reply. I get a new under the guaranty + software free. Old one if you see the sign of too many corrosion, cleaning
with pure alcohol will help just for a short period but the best solution is to know someone who can apply all over the
special black filling for electronic parts (some kind of epoxy resin) but NOT cover totally elements with heat dissipation.
