The wheels on my 2007 Volvo, S80/V8 AWD are Zubra 8x18". Driving with these rims in Chicagoland has resulted in four (4) bent wheels. I even ran over a pothole on Interstate I65 in Indiana. Are the Balius 8x18" rims stronger than the Zubra rims. Or will I be better off replacing the 18" rims with 17". Please advise.<br>

You'll be better off with 17" rims. Because the Balius are also 18x8 rims and will use the same 245 40R 18 tires. That 40 profile is what's killing you.<p>Move down to 17" rims, get a bigger profile tire (you can even try to fill in your fender a bit more with a bit higher than recommended profile) that would give you better shock absorbency and not bust your rims up. <p>I find the low profile to be the main issue - not the actual rim. I don't see how you have actually bent all four of your rims. When you see a pothole, do you go at it dead on at full speed and go WHAM? Because I've even hit a 2x4 on the interstate going 65, and only blew out a tire - the rim was fine.

The potholes in Chicago do not give you a chance to slow down before running over them. Sometimes they are filled with snow or water which masks their depth. I've traded my 2007 Volvo S80/V8 with the Zubra 8x18" rims for a 2009 Volvo S80/V8 with Balius 8x18" rims. The dealer has agreed to switch the Balius 8x18" rims for the standard 3.2 Cassini 7x17" wheels with the 225/50-17 tires. Please advise.

Eh, well, you are loosing money if you just let them take the Balius wheels and have them give you the Cassini's. Maybe you could take the car with the Balius, buy the Cassini's separately, and then sell the Balius wheels to someone on Swedespeed?<p>Or at least have the dealer compensate you for the downgrade.

I've tried to negotiate with the dealer to compensate me for the downgrade, but they came across as doing me a favor. Luckly, I have until Monday to make my final decision when I take delivery of the new (2009) car. Also, I have tried to trade the 2007 Zubra 8x18" rims for 7x17" rims with no takers.<p>2007 S80 V8/AWD with Sport, Climate and Collision Avoidance Packages (18" Zubras, 4C, Ventilated Steats, etc.), Electric Silver Metallic, BLIS, PCC and IPOD Music Interface<p><br><i>Modified by cet1st at 8:03 PM 7-10-2009</i><BR><BR>

In that case, I would stick with the Balius wheels and buy some good aftermarket 17" wheels online, and put some tires on them. I guess you could either then keep the Balius's in your garage, or use them till you bend the rims, and then throw them out, and swap in the aftermarket 17" wheels?

You are buying what is most likely among the last 50 or 100 S80 V8's sold in the US. <p>Post pics of the 2009 V8 when you get it!

Insead of down-sizing to 17" wheels, what about keeping the Balius wheels and up-sizing the tires to 245/50-18. Are there any problems taking this approach? <p><br>2009 S80 V8/AWD with Technology and Collision Avoidance Packages (18" Balius, without 4C and BLIS), Electric Silver Metallic.<BR><BR>

According to Volvo 17" rims are not suitable for the V8 unless they are 8" wide like the Meissa design.<p><A HREF="http://vccs.volvocars.se/accessories/cat/en-GB/S80%2007-/styling/alu/VCC-342647.htm" TARGET="_blank">http://vccs.volvocars.se/acces...7.htm</A><p><A HREF="http://vccs.volvocars.se/accessories/cat/en-GB/S80%2007-/styling/alu/VCC-279520.htm" TARGET="_blank">http://vccs.volvocars.se/acces...0.htm</A><p>

It seems that I better keep the Balius 8x18" rims at this time.

I'll think you'll need to go to a 17" wheel to get any significant improvement in pothole resistence. If you change to a different Volvo style or aftermarket brand of 18s, you will have spent a good deal of money with little to no benefit. On my 2009 T6, I sold my 18" Zubras and replaced them with Rial 7-spoke 17 x 7.5" wheels (which look just like the OEM wheels on the S80 3.2), and upsized the tires to ContiProContact 225/60R17. That gives a speedometer/odometer error of 7% (now reads low), but that is OK with me as I can look at my Garmin iQ3600 GPS to note actual speed and distance traveled. The taller sidewalls of the 60-series tires help when I drive the broken up roads in South Jersey, and anywhere else.

Don't see any reason why that wouldn't work. Just check the tire overall height to make sure you are not too far from stock. The tire manufacturer's website may list the tire dimensions, such as overall height, tire radius, and section height. Then you can compare a 245/40R18 with a 245/50R17. I used the Continental Tire website.

The following tire specifications come from Tire Rack:<br>- 245/45R17 tire diameter is 25.7" @ 811 revolutions/mile<br>- 245/40R18 tire diameter is 25.7" @ 809 revolutions/mile<br>- 245/50R17 tire diameter is 26.8" @ 777 revolutions/mile
