I’ve been wanting to get into a turbo Volvo for years now. Initially it was a turbo manual redblock, but since I started driving the V70 I have been constantly day dreaming about a t5m. My desires have varied with time and experiences, but throughout the entire journey to this point I’ve known for sure that whatever turbo Volvo I get my hands on, it has to be red. So low and behold the newest addition to my stable, a little red $100 850r sedan that has been down on its luck lately. I have potentially big plans for this car, kinda bummed it’s not an estate, but I’m very excited about finally getting a chance to save/rebuild a cheap rare Volvo!

The R was posted on the unaffiliated thread over in the classified section and when I saw it I knew I had to investigate. It has timing belt issues, I’m assuming a tensioner or the water pump failed and the belt jumped, but the belt isn’t broken because the owner has cranked it over to try to start it *cringe*. I have decent hopes that the engine is salvageable so I ordered a timing belt kit to replace everything to hopefully make it run again, if this route works I’ll be compression testing it to verify engine health. If the current engine isn’t salvageable I’ll be performing a full drivetrain swap consisting of a B5234t3 out of a 98 s70 t5 and an internal slave m56 out of a 2001 s60 na, along with a host of scope creep parts thrown at it to make a nice little autocross & track day car. Living is Milwaukee gives me the luxury of plenty of race tracks around that make autocross and track days incredibly affordable.

I’ll be picking it up on 6/15/19 morning and performing the timing belt job after I get it home, the results of that job will determine how much money I sink into this target of opportunity! I'll be pretty closely mirroring Sven's R sedan because of the phenomenal job he has done on it so far, but I have a couple of ideas to set mine apart ;) The front bumper looks like it could use a little bit of repair, along with the cracked front seats but the interior is in really good shape, even has heated rear seats!

Check base timing. If it’s correct, check compression. If it’s not, motor swap it there’s no reason to fix that power plant.

$100 is correct! It was originally listed for $350 and when he found out I'm a college student and want to rebuild it he told me his wife wouldn't let him give it away so $100 would do, and I happily accepted LOL

That's my plan. I made an excel file of parts needed, and parts I want to throw on there because I would have already pulled the engine so might as well. There are several local guys who have done an m56 swap before that are willing to help so I'm not terribly nervous for it, but I know I can't plan for everything!

If you don’t have the m56h yet see if you can snag a m56lk from a 01+ t5 p2. Better ratios. There’s a nice smf conversion kit for internal slave m56x’s that’s cheap from Europe

Having been driving M56H my entire driving career, i can tell you that the ratios kinda suck. Would be even worse with a turbo. M56LK or M66 is where it's at.

I was quoted $150 for a ~75k mile M56H, there is a 109k mile M56LK local to MN for $400, I'll call tomorrow and see if they'll lower the price but that might be doable. The real questions is what is the SMF conversion for internal slaves that you speak of, you got a PN or a link??

$400 is totally worth it! Short 1-2-3 makes your car a second faster to 80.

Plus crawler low gear in traffic.

Search the PN on eBay.co.uk cam save hundreds.

Also, go get vida. You’re gonna need it.

I have never bought anything on Ebay, let alone UK Ebay. . . Is a $340 kit too sketchy? lol The crawler gear in traffic is the most tempting part, coming from Na it'll take me a long time to notice that 1 second difference to 80.

I've been eyeing VIDA computers for a while, the parts look up capabilities are sweet, but I've had good luck with just using different parts websites for that. Is there another incentive that I don't know about?

Welcome to the club!!! And for $100 damn!!! You have quite a journey ahead of you
Realistically it'll either be revived the day I buy it or be slowly worked on over the course of the summer. The Milwaukee to Minneapolis commute to work on it isn't ideal but will make for amazingly fun long weekends. But thank you! For $100 I couldn't say no, especially with a platform I've become so comfortable with and have such good resources for.

It’s a toy you lucked out on for less than scrap value. Don’t rush, if you’re gonna build it do it right, once and economical. Which is easy.

That's what I've done with mine. Although I paid more than scrap value for it, lol. If I was to buy everything to build that car in a day, it would have probably cost me like $30k.

I absolutely believe youre knowledgable, but lots of your comments are very subjective or have a lack of nuance.

Better ratio's, sucking ratio's, to whom....?!

Not carved in stone, a matter of preference and depending on the charactaristics of a setup, longer or shorter gear ratio's and different final drive...
What you like, can be disliked by other 'drivers' and vice versa ;-)

Ultimately I would really like to go all in and RN swap a 855R, or build & m66 swap a 2000 VR, currently one of those two is my dream car. Did they even build passion red VR's in 2000? I guess that's a question for later lol. But I kind of view this as a warm up to when I'm out of school, and out of student loans, to let loose on that dream car build. If the M56LK works out it'll be a happy addition to the build, but if it doesn't I wont be heartbroken. I'd like to avoid a Miata in my future as much as possible, and I think this, when all is said and done, will handily beat a Miata with the same amount invested.

I think that different gear ratios can be argued to be better than others, that's out of my knowledge base, but squeezing every ounce of speed out of a car can easily be pushed there. I also think that the main preference is if the extra cost is worth it or not, and that is not only the age old question (I've been writing too many discussion posts like this for online history class lately haha) but also the one I'll be answering soon. Luckily, from my perspective, I don't think I can make a wrong decision.

Oh that would be incredibly useful... My sister drives a VIDA scan-able s60, so splitting it with my dad is definitely a possibility. I'll start keeping an eye on the various classified groups I'm apart of for a laptop and DICE Unit.

THAT is sick.
Good for you, man - now you've got a really good list to work on with the extra cash you saved, and can buy some Volans!
