Well we got through Ike ok... What a day though!
We were outside Friday evening looking at a strange sunset - cloudy sky with bright orange highlights and perfectly still.
The storm began late evening and got steadily stronger through the night. We lost power around 2.30. At 4am we could feel the house moving.
Saturday was a LONG day - non stop heavy rain and the strongest wind I have ever experienced (I went outside to take a reading with a handheld gizmo but, on seeing tree branches flying horizontally, I thought better of it). The storm finally gave out in the afternoon to our relief!
We were shocked when we toured the neighborhood on foot that afternoon - so many downed trees. Our neighbors lost a huge pine, our favorite tree down the street appears to have exploded into splinters. The pocket park down the road is in awful shape with several downed trees. We were stuck in the neighborhood as both roads out were blocked.
I have never seen anything like it. It's like half the forest was put through a chipper and blown through the neighborhood.
We are still without power and phone service still and the estimates seem to be somewhere between 2 and 5 weeks for restoration.
I did have mobile for some time after the storm but then it went away - wondering if FEMA or local authorities took it over to coordinate the response... It came back tonight.
We are bored but fine - we have food, we lined up for ice today and the store was exponentially better than yesterday.
Probably going to volunteer at FEMA POD tomorrow if they need the help...
The sense of community is fantastic here - the radio stations are doing an incredible job of helping people find information they need.
I have some pics but no means to upload them yet.
Did you miss me
UKMatt
