I'm looking at purchasing an XC90 and have read about the transmission issues on some of the model years. Which model year would be the best to purchase used? Besides transmission, any other major issues to be aware of?
Thanks -

Re: XC90 - (Toronto1)

The only one that has statistically significant problem is pre-07 T6/4-sp. transmission combination.
2.5T, 3.2 and V8 are rather reliable during the entire model run.

Re: XC90 - (Toronto1)

I have a 2003 T6 AWD -- It has absolutely been the worst Volvo I have ever own. This was my fourth Volvo, and I loved the first three. It currently has 91,000 miles and I have LITERALY replaced everthing but the engine and transmission. Even my dealer's service manager said transmission has been the #1 issue with the 2003 model.
I hope to be able to trade it quickly -- and it sadly won't be for another Volvo.

You'll be pleasantly surprised at the refinements made so far.
I've had a '04 2.5T, '07 3.2, and now a '08 V8.

I had an '04 T6, and while I didn't keep it long enough for tranny problems to develop, I hated that doggy 4 speed. We just this month took possession of a 2010 XC90 V8; wow - what a difference between it and that T6. TONS of power and the 6-speed tranny is as smooth as you can get.
