So I washed the rims on the XC90 yesterday at 3 p.m., hosed them off and let the VO sit until this morning. The weather was in the 70's yesterday, so I figured everything would air dry nicely. This morning, my wife put the rig into reverse and applied the gas but the vehicle would not move. She then shifted to drive and again the vehicle would not move. She put it in park and then walked around the vehicle to see if anythinkg was wedged under a tire (of course there wasn't), and then tried reverse again. The vehicle did move this time but she reported a loud banging or clunking noise . The temeperature in Syracuse was down in the forties last night, so I don't think anything froze up. However, is it possible that the water seized up something in the brakes, preventing the vehicle from moving once in gear:confused:? I'm kind of freaking out as we just had a baby a month ago and cannot throw a lot of $$$ at the VO right now...On a side note, we are the second owners of a 2007 V8 XC90. The PO did the required maintenance during the lease period and then routine maintenance up until we purchased it. I'll check the paperwork but I don't think he ever did a tranny fluid change.
Thank you in advance for the help!

Seriously doubt that the problem is related to the washing, and it would take lower temperatures than the 40s to freeze anything. Unfortunately, V-8s owners are reporting a disturbing number of transmission failures in the forums; still nothing like those of the T-6, but it does seem as if there may be a problem surfacing.

I had the same symptoms in an MB R-class and it required a new valve body ($1200) for the 7Gtronic transmission, which is a known issue with that tranny. Please keep us in the loop.

Good Luck!

If the XC90 has the same park brake system as the S60/V70 Rs then your problem is with the parking brake shoes. They will delaminate and cause the rear to freeze up.
If this is the case, I'd advise you to replace the shoes ASAP.

There are threads on the R forum with more details.

Apparently according to TascaParts they are shoes.

Well, I seriously hope it is parking brake-related and not the tranny. Freezing was definately out of the question last night, I was thinking more like seizing as in it rusted together. I spoke with my wife at lunch today and she thought the PO had replaced the parking brake (PO is a co-worker of hers). I will check the service records we received with the vehicle and have her inquire with the PO about what exactly was done to the parking brake (shoes, cable replacement, etc.). I consider myself mechanically inclined, would a parking brake shoe replacement be a straightforward DIY job or sokmething for the dealer? I'll scan the forum for a write up...

Thank you for the responses, and I will definitely keep you posted.

Here is a link to the parking brake repair for the R. It should be close enough to give you an idea of what's involved. Parking Brake repair.

If you have ever worked on brakes with good results, you should be able to tackle the job. For sure you will make points with the wife. :)

My parking brakes started out the same way, sticking if they sat after washing. Wouldn't move in F or R then a loud bang when if popped free. One of my shoes had come off the backing and another was halfway. You just want to make sure to get them replaced before any loose friction material gets wedged tight and won't come loose.

My R would always lock up after washing it. I lived about a mile from the carwash, but the next day they would be locked up. I just broke it free by putting it in gear and giving it the gas. One day I drug a tire about 6 feet. But no issues ever since. I have never changed my parking brake shoes on my R.

They have been known to explode, but it is usually from people that never use them. When they suddenly decide too, then they have issues. I use the parking brake on everything all the time.

The springs were replaced in my XC90 about a year ago?
Not sure if the parking brake has been used since.
Do you think I will have any issues if I try the parking brake?

What happens when you put it in neutral? Can you push it and it moves. If not, I'm voting for frozen /rusted park brake cable or mechanism, or delaminated brake shoes or something of that nature. I think the that the comment about a trend in v8 transmission issues is a little bit overblown and of those which have had issues I don't recall one report of an all out failure where the vehicle would not move.

Yeah I have a feeling it's not tranny related. We havent had any prior indications of trouble, such as hard shifting or clunking. This is the first time it's happened and also the first time I've washed the rims (typically we take it to the car wash). I will crawl under it tomorrow if it's not raining and look for any signs of delaminated shoes or excessive rust build up.

Our R - thanks for the link. It looks relatively similar to the parking brake job I did on our grand cherokee. Hopefully the R is similar to the XC90 in brake componentry. Let me tell you those springs were a serious PITA to hook from one "caliper" to the other. I know there is a special tool for stretching those springs, but I made it happen with needle nose pliers and needle nose vise grips. I'll update upon further investigation....

I filed a complaint with the NHTSA...#10913682 to wit: There appears to be an intermittent defect with the transmission when the vehicle gets wet. When wet the vehicle lock up and not easily go into forward or reverse. This occasionally occurs after going through a car wash or when the vehicle is driven in wet weather and then, parked. After a few hours, when it is attempted to put the vehicle in gear, the transmission is locked up and the vehicle won't move. Only by rocking the vehicle does the transmission loosen up and the vehicle goes into reverse. The parking brake is not engaged. This issue is mentioned multiple times on Volvo related forums.

Pull some links on this please and post them?. Been trolling this site and others for more than 11 years and this is not something that I've really ever come across.

Would be very interested in seeing more information on the scenario you note in your complaint.

Thanks
