Hey guys....
You might remember me from a few months back...........we posted up because we were looking for a new SUV to tow our travel trailer. We decided to replace our Sequoia with a new Tundra, so we're all set on that regard.
Now we're thinking about replacing our 2005 Passat 1.8T 4Motion 5M with something A) Faster B) more Luxurious and C) an SUV.....
The only 2 SUVs that really stir my soul are the 05 XC90 V8 that is sitting in my parent's driveway, and the Touareg V8.
If I buy a Volvo, it will be my parents.....if I buy a Touareg, it will be from a dealer/off Ebay/etc. Either vehicle will have a 100k extended warranty on it, and the Touareg would be at least an 05+ to get past some of the horror stories the -04s had.
I havent spent a ton of seat time in the T-reg, but have in the Volvo. My thoughts are:
1. Both trucks (in V8 form) are absolute rocketships.....no complaints in the power department, and both sound A+ too!
2. Volvo has a nicer interior........longer (we dont need 3rd row) with more cargo area, more supple leather, more ergonomic dash layout, etc.....it feels more elegant inside.
3. T-Reg is a little better looking outside, in my opinion, though the XC90 isnt bad....
4. The T-Reg rode and drove like a sports car, from what I can remember from my test drive last year. It's got wide stance, huge tire/wheel combo, big brakes, etc. It is stiff and handles great, which is what WE want....the XC90 handles much softer....while steering response is great in the XC, there is body roll and more suspension action happening during accel/decel.
......those are my thoughts. Would a set of Eibach springs tighten up the handling of the XC to approx what the T-Reg is??? I think I'd rather have the Volvo because I like the interior, I know the previous owner, and it's got more space............but I dont like the soft/spongy handling.
The handling IS important to us.......I can make my wife motion sick in the Passat, without even flogging it too hard......it's more of a LeSabre as far as ride than I think a European car should be, and I want to make DARN sure our next ride is firm;)
Thoughts and input are welcome!!
Thanks, Ben

Coming from an 04V8 Touareg with every option except for parking sensors, they are of the 2 distinct natures you have already noticed. The VW has horrible throttle and brake modulation, and worlds of electrical glitches. It is rather compact by comparison and slower due to the weight (5200lbs). Go with an 06 if you go with VW. The 05's still had problems.

Re: XC90 V8 or Touareg V8?? (MagoonR)

Dont know what your reply was questioning, but I'll clarify.......
We live in Frankfort, MI which is an hour from the nearest VW dealer, which hasn't had a V8 Touareg (new or used) in 6 months. I've got to make a 3 hour drive to find one to test drive, so I'm going a bit by memory from a car we drove last Fall........it was an '04 Touareg V8 with air suspension, nav, and the big tire/wheel package. It had great accelleration, fantastic braking, and the handling was very firm.....with wide track and a large footprint of rubber on the ground, it was very responsive.
Comparing my parent's XC which we had for a couple days last week, the XC seems every bit as fast, but the handling isnt as good.....
??
Did that help? Before I BUY one, I'll make the drive to test one out.......if I find out that the XC suspension cannot be tightened up at all, then I'm heading more in that direction already....
Ben

I would think a set or heavier anti-sway bars would help in the body roll dept. I sasw IPD had them for like $380. I don't like that body roll either on ours, but my wife drives it 95% of the time, she needs to take it easy!

I had a Touareg ('04, V6). Wife wanted the VOR edition XC90, so the absolutely trouble free VW went. The Volvo has a better ride, but the Torareg had much better high speed manners; very German at speed. I love the extra space and versatility of the Volvo; putting the rear seats down in the VW was a real pain.
Exterior looks are too subjective to comment on; but I can state that the interior quality of the VW is higher. Check out the wood and metals - that's real brushed aluminum, not painted plastic. The one thing I still can't get used to in the XC90 is the cheap interior door grips. Way out of place in a car priced like this. In the Touareg, your hand grips hand stitched leather; Very nice.

Bottom Line....Ask yourself, which has the most safey features and better crash test results?..My bet is the Volvo. I am sure I probably am opening up a can of worms...

Handling wise, the Egg is much closer to a BMW sedan, and the XC90 a caddy. The Egg has very little body roll and mine has an adjustable air suspension. The throttle and brake modulation is extremely jerky though - enough to be aggravating. The XC90 is so much more comfortable and smooth to ride in. It makes you want to relax and fall asleep immediately

I THINK THE VW WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE IF YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL IN SNOW. I THINK THE VW IS A GREAT PLATEFORM FOR JUST THESE CONDITIONS. HOWEVER YOU KNOW JUST AS WELL THAT INTERIOR ROOM IS A BIT TIGHT IN THE BACK SO IF HAULING IS NOT THE CASE, GO VW.
