Can someone explain exactly what all the features are in the XC90 "Security Package" which costs a very princely $675:
Here is what it says from the Volvo Web Site:
"Security Package (Window Tint is not available with the Security Package) $675
Infrared Windshield and Front Side Windows
Laminated Side Windows
Level Sensor
Mass Movement Sensor"
What do all these things do?
Thanks.
Michael
Re: XC90 Security Package Question (meinstei)

Michael,
I know it is pricey. The infrared windshield and fornt windows will hellp keep the inside cool by reflecting some light (not all). For leather seats, I prefer this one (I wish you can order this option separately for $270). The laminated windows will have extra films inside of windows to prevent them from being shattered when broken. It will break like the windshield. It will protect the passengers better. However, due to the extra films inside of the windows, the tinted windows are not available (T6 has dark tinted rear and cargo area). But I am not sure it will affect cargo area windows. The laminated windows are strong so it is not easy to be broken when someone tries to break in your car. You may know the other sensor options. Well, the level sensor will alarm when someone attempts to tow away your car or steal its tires. And mass movement sensor will detect someone to break the windows to get in your car.
Well, I hope it will help a little.

[Modified by patriot, 12:37 AM 9-25-2002]

Re: XC90 Security Package Question (patriot)

Very good "Patriot"!
Furthermore, the side laminated windows (which are tinted on ALL US-bound XC90s, from the driver/passenger and back) decrease the interior noise levels as much as 5dB lower and they also block up to 95% of the UV rays...
Yannis

Re: XC90 Security Package Question (GrecianVolvo)

Somehow, the laminating work will affect the tinting job according to package saying "will delete the tinted window". I was told that the dark tinting (rear windows) would be deleted, but not regular light tinting. Otherwise, I would have ordered the laminated window option ($125). I will double check on this.

Here is the word that I got.
"The way our production manager explained it to me if you take the Security Package. With the laminated side windows a translucent film is heat pressed between two sheets of glass which makes the glass harder to break and is therefore more difficult for a potential thief to
enter your car. Very much like a windshield. The "dark tinted glass" in the rear is removed as a result (because they can not put both films together). The infared reflective windshield and front side windows adds an IR reflective translucent film between the glass which keeps the front of the car cooler. All glass is still normally tinted just no dark tinting."

Re: XC90 Security Package Question (GrecianVolvo)

Well, I guess that is the way the package is. I don't know why the Volvo made it like that. IR glass option (maybe not available separately for the States side customers) includes the windshield and two front side windows. The satndard tinting for T6 is regular light color tinted front side windows and dark tinted rear side windows and rear cargo area windows.
The laminated windows will delete the rear side windows' dark tinting, but they will have the same light color tinted windows both front and rear.
The IR glass will not affect the light color tinting on the front side windows.
As far as I know, the dark tinted windows don't apply to the front side windows, which come with light color tinting.

Security Package

The security package does delete all dark window tinting - I think the car looks rather goofy without the dark tint. The kids in the back seat look really exposed. Does anyone see a reason why aftermarket tinting can't be applied to the laminated glass?

In the XC70s, Touring package does give you tinted laminated windows. But the color of the tint is entirely different in the XC70 (greenish) than that in the XC90 (dark gray)...perhaps, it is a supplier issue.
Yannis

Re: Security Package (GrecianVolvo)

Funny, my salesman thought that the mass sensor alerted you if you somehow left your kid or pet, or anything that moves inside of the car. Maybe it does that too. They also said that the extra lamination was for protection in accidents, never mentioned break-ins, although I suppose it helps there too.
I ordered the security package, does it rally make the car look that bad? Even if there is less tint in the back it still sounds like it will keep the interior cooler, a plus as far as I am concerned. Even standard windows block out most UV, correct?

But you can disable this feature, at will.

quote:
They also said that the extra lamination was for protection in accidents, never mentioned break-ins, although I suppose it helps there too.

I don't think so. Re: Security Package (GrecianVolvo)

What would keep XC90 interior coolest in direct sun -- standard black tinted (keep in mind I'm having front side windows tinted dark to match rear) or laminated windows included with Security Package?

Re: Security Package (pht10)

Laminated windows do not block heat. They block UV rays (which can reduce some of the heat) but that is it. A tinted window is a much better bet.
Yannis
