Re: XC90...Motor Trend SUV of the Year (GrecianVolvo)

quote:
Do you think there could be any correlation between the fact that Volvo never won such awards in the past when it was a small independent company, and now that Volvo is owned by the Ford Motor Company with an enormous amount of advertising dollars to spend that Volvo suddenly finds itself a winner? Coincidence? Is there any evidence to support that Motor Trend has a long history of “economically adjusting” their Car of the Year choice? How about the ’74 Mustang II, the ’71 Chevy Vega, the ’83 Renault Alliance, the ’62 Buick Special, and even the ’60 Chevy Corvair? Let’s hope the XC-90 brings more to the party than this illustrious group of previous Motor Trend ‘winners’. Buy an XC90 in spite of Motor Trend's endorsement, not because of it.
Does it really matter? What matters is that Volvo broke that mold and that is a significant change for them. Anyone can "suppose" or concoct "conspiracy" theories. You and I will never find out. We can sit here and wonder but that is not going to get us anywhere.
I wrote this previously and I will write it again; Volvo winning this nice award is not panacea . This will not solve Volvo's problems (whatever they may be) and/or accord deity status to the XC90.
I don't understand what is the purpose of mentioning the other models...when you pick one each year, you are bound to have a few that will not really make it...
Yannis
P.S. How are things in Temecula? I will be by your neck of the woods (San Diego) from November 3 until the 11th...

I guess Ford threw more money Motor Trend's way than Honda did. Maybe Honda's saving the moola for the Car fo the Year award, i.e. Honda Accord. LOL. Conspiracy Theories abound...
