Re: XC90 gas guzzler?????? (gmark2000)

I've been averaging 16.6-17.1 in city driving lately (after 1200 miles, was steadily increasing from 15.0 before that). Just in the middle of a 700 mile round trip, about 1700 miles now, and the highway average was 20.2 (driving 70-80mph most of the way, don't remember the computer's average speed).

So far, mine's been performing much closer to spec than others. I'm happy--so far!

Aquaman,

My numbers are exactly in line with you with my T6. (17.0 on country/city road driving 20.5 on highway) How someone gets 13 in my mind is driving block to block between red lights. I don't mind paying the extra $10.00 or so for every 1000 miles compared to the 2.5T, what I do mind is the "inconvenience" of refueling every 225 miles. I wish the fuel tank held a couple more gallons.

Re: XC90 gas guzzler?????? (BillsXC90)

My wife is getting 14.x on her daily 8 mile one way commute in stop and go traffic. I don't see this getting close to the claimed 18mpg city.

We are up into the 22.x mpg range on the highway with about 2500 miles on it. I plan to change my oil around 3000 miles, we'll see if that makes a difference.

I would like to know what Volvo defines as city & highway driving so we can do an accurate comparison. How did Volvo achieve the 18mpg City and 24mpg highway claims(estimates) for the 2.5T?

Re: XC90 gas guzzler?????? (83caddy16v)

After my 2002 S60AWD (2.4 turbo engine) was broken in (about 2500 miles) I noticed a dramatic increase in milage-- up to 22 in town and 28+ on the interstate. Since I've moved to the LA area, however, my in town milage is down to about 18. I think it is due entirely to more stop and go-- the area where I lived before was smaller and had fewer traffic lights. I was afraid that maybe this was a sign that something was happening, since the milage seemed to take a nose dive, but when I took a recent trip I still was able to manage 27-28 on the interstate at 80 miles per hour.

Volvo is not reponsible for the fuel estimates, the EPA is.
If you drive conservatively you'll hit the average in a couple thousand miles.
Do alot of stop and go, hard accelerating and you won't.
The T6 is also making due with a 4 spd trans rather than a 5spd.

Re: XC90 gas guzzler?????? (VolvoMax)

We've put 9,000 miles on the car since delivery on December 20th. We did a big highway driving trip last month and achieved 20.5 to 20.9 mpg on the freeways at 70 mph and better. Driving around our local mix of country roads, freeway, small towns and small rural cities with hills and small mountains we get about 15.5 mpg overall on the T6. The high freeway mileage on the long trip was with premium (93 octane) fuel. Most of our driving around home is with 89 octane fuel. Volvo recommends 91 octane for best performance and fuel economy but says that anything 87 octane or better is sufficent. They would not say this unless the fuel was safe for the engine - in fact the versatility in fuel grades is one of the advantages of the XC90 over several of its competitors. But I don't doubt that 91 octane would get me one more mpg around town.

We have a 2.5T with about 4000 miles on it. Driving is about 75% city/25% highway and we are at a consistent 18MPG average using mostly mid range fuel. When we take it just on the highway it looks to be getting in the 21MPG range. Took a few thousand miles to begin to see the numbers steady to this range.

790km ~ 490 miles /19 gallons = 26mpg
Could be a pic of someone just driving downhill after a fill-up. I know this doesn't count towards the xc90, but my s40 is stated at 22 city, 30 highway. I get around 300 miles from the tank. After I fill up, I head off to the highway and stay at a constant speed of 60mph with fair amounts of hills, and when I finish my way of 20 miles, my trip computer says 445 miles. I got it to say 490 once.

490/12= 40.8 mpg

Re: XC90 gas guzzler?????? (GrecianVolvo)

Hey Yannis---I think putting in premium and getting better mileage is in your head and manufacturers BS. The octane has lots to due with the combustion ratio, these cars handle it just fine. I own an s80, s60, s40 and xc70 and I have tried premium and plus in all these cars and it makes no difference in mpg.
I drive the s80 and put in regular. Over the last 6-8 tanks of gas my guage on the dash says 21.1 mpg, that is pretty damn good. . what is premium going to do execept cost me alot more $$$$.
When I picked up my car from dealer and used the first tank of gas, I called the dealer to ask what type of premium he put in car, he said they only put in regular, and don't waste your money on premium.. Just my2 cents.

Wow, once you get your XC90 you'll have a different model for every day of the working week. http://********************/smile/emwink.gif But maybe you don't need to work ?? http://********************/smile/embeer.gif Did you ever hear of the book "The self made Millionaire"?? They don't use premium gas !!! http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif

Have you tried it for a test period? I have heard from people that did test it out they consistently got better gas mileage on higher octane. One 850 owner said that the difference in gas mileage paid for itself with the difference in price per gallon. Meaning it gave him better enough fuel economy to make it cheaper to buy the 91 vs the 89 and it is better for the car in the long run.

But who is very generous to his kids and x-wife (an S60 for the kids, jeeeez). I have two boys 5 and 2. Maybe some day I'll have 4 Volvos also. http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif My wife already wants her "own" XC90. I'm working on securing two educations first. That way they can someday buy there own Volvo's too. http://********************/smile/emwink.gif

OOPS! Missed your post! Bad me! Well, it is definitely not in my head. I have been driving these cars for 9 years now and I wanted to find out if Volvo's "edict" that recommends premium for "best gas mileage and optimum performance is hogwash. I am telling you that it is not. Now, do you expect HUGE differences? No...but you can see differences of up to 1.5 mpg.

Sure they do...but that is not the point.

Don't know...if you don't want to see the difference, you won't! http://********************/smile/emwink.gif

It will make a small difference. Plus, premium gasolines do have additional detergents compared to regular and middle grades. That is a given.

Why don't you use Pep Boys oil instead of the national brand oil you are using? That one is also rated SF or SL like the national brand you are using!

Well, they are definitely CLUELESS and you can use my name when you tell them that! http://********************/smile/emwink.gif
