Thank you...I only wished there was something I could have just plugged in like that.Very nice! It maintains the Volvo factory look and appears to offer as much connectivity options as an aftermarket system. Are the GPS maps the same ones provided for the XC90 Navigation system? What model-year was the S80 that donated the system?
s80 amp no reason=$, just my idea was that it would hook up easier than aftermarket ans it did ...I too have left the old part of the radio head unit and amp so I dont have any electrical problems, cause if you unplug it, climate and head lights act up immediately...i dont have steering control and nor am willing to spent 200$ plus for it to connect them ...this hole project cost me 240$ and that includes everything you see.Why did you choose to use the S80 amp? Does it offer more flexible connectivity than the XC90 or easier to tie into the Volvo schematics vs an aftermarket amp? Did you retain steering wheel controls? I have seen aftermarket stereos and even an iPad installed in an XC90, but the stock stereo head unit and amp remained connected, though hidden away.
Why did it cost so little?s80 amp no reason=$, just my idea was that it would hook up easier than aftermarket ans it did ...I too have left the old part of the radio head unit and amp so I dont have any electrical problems, cause if you unplug it, climate and head lights act up immediately...i dont have steering control and nor am willing to spent 200$ plus for it to connect them ...this hole project cost me 240$ and that includes everything you see.
no reason, that's what I was willing to pay and it just happen to come to this amount. Why did it cost so little?
I used a gray plug for speakers from S80 (just the "plug" not the wires at all) and unplugged speaker plug XC90 amp., then I figured out where do all the speakers plug at the gray plug for the S80 amp (same as s60 amp... just an FYI)...power for the radio comes from XC90 amp and I extended the wires from the amp to the radio and used a green OE used plug (and I bought the radio kit plug as well..."pics in ebay are not correct" http://www.ebay.com/itm/390281405851 ) ...nowspeakers output go through the gray wire and I bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/200484953400 to connect them from radio to the amp. just the same way as it is set up in my s60r...so it is basically like original s60 setup or s80 kinda sort of.Dougy, your pics are awsome. Forgive me for my ignorance, Sure would love a bit more explanation. How did you wire the S80 amp? Output from the after market radio comes into the S80 amp, and the speaker connector from the XC90 amp plugs into the speaker connector from the S80 amp?
Where did you get power for the after market radio from?
you take the old radio/cd apart and keep this box and plug it up "very easy" ...one connector in the pic ( the one on right) goes nowhere it just looks like it is plugged in .What did you do with the CD Player and the connection? shouldn't there be continuity on the most network?
Radio speaker outputs plug into to these(pic below) and that goes to the amp...any loose/unused wires left coming out of radio I cut back and bundle together and heat shrink wrap them. When you buy an after market radio, and use only the line outs to feed an amp, what do we do with the speaker wires? Just ignore the connector? Would that not ruin the radio amp?
yes, eyeball it.here is mineI started on my project yesterday. I realized I have to cut the back of the frame holding the CD players and ICM Module. Is that right? if so where do I cut it?
well, steering controls are not hooked up on this one, when I was searching on internet i found a device for 270$ in Germany and I sure would not pay for that ...but really for me remote in my hand is all i need and as far as the re-source I dont know of one other than figuring it out as I go along and google.I'm just starting down this road, doing research and trying to determine if Double DIN GPS deck or CarPC (or CarTablet) is the right way to go. It's bad enough in a regular car, but all the fiber stuff and the stereo weirdness just makes me feel a little ill. My car has the, admittedly awful, navigation system, but it works and (for far less than a new system would cost) could be updated with new maps. I wish I understood the systems involved a little better (like the steering wheel controls for both audio and nav) and how they all talk with one another... Is there any resource to learn more about Volvo's dark arts?
