My wife pines for the XC90. I never owned any kind of SUV before so I don't know much about them.
I am thinking of either an '05-'06 used T6 or the new V8. I drove the 2.5T and it felt too sluggish. Which is the best deal now, considering depreciation and value, a fairly new CPO or a spanking new '06 model?
What should I be looking for in the options department? I like to have loaded cars, but some packages in some vehicles are just ridiculously priced for the value.

Well,
If you want a T6, it's gonna have to an 05 or older. Only 2.5t and V8 for 06.
Getting a new or used car is an emotional experience. Load it to the gills and enjoy.
If the 2.5t felt sluggish, sound like you're a candidate for a big ol V8.
Drive a used T6 and V8, then decide.
CPO has it's benefits, 100k warranty, lower initial hit in value etc. Spankin new is nice because you "raise" it!
Whichever engine you get, you'll feel good knowing you've picked one he!! of a safe SUV (IMO the safest). Plus, they really hold value well.
Tim

It has the worst resale value of all XC90s plus the engine/transmission combo will get you (at best) the same gas mileage as the V8 but with less hp and torque.
Have you looked around to see if one of the local Volvo retailers have a leftover 2006 V8? Or even a retired loaner/demo?
Where, in San Diego, do you live? I just moved here from PA.
Yannis

Re: XC90 buying help (GrecianVolvo)

I have the V8 version and my wife and I really like it. I've driven the other engine/tranny offerings and, for us, the V8 is it. Mileage-wise, the V8 does surprisingly well, especially when I keep the highway speeds below 80 mph. My wife gets even better mileage than I do, but she drives like a...hmm maybe I shouldn't say!

Re: XC90 buying help (Mika)

I had an 04 2.5T and traded in for an 06 V8 for the added power and drivability.
The V8 is the way to go (sorry T6 owners). I had the option back in 2004 for either the 2.5T or T6 and purchased the 2.5T for it's proven track record in the other models. The T6 had some maintenance issues with oil leaks at the flame trap box and has the older GM 4 speed transmission.

I have an '05 T6 and it's fine.
Don't pay any extra for the premium sound - because it's neither!

Re: XC90 buying help (Mika)

Mika, if you are looking for a used XC90 because of the price, consider the Overseas Delivery Option. When my husband and I were looking around the dealer's lot one day, we noticed that many of the 1 and 2 year old models were actually more expensive than what we paid by doing OSD. In addition we got the journey of a lifetime. Check out the OSD forum here on SS. We got the 2.5T AWD mostly because we didn't feel like the extra bit of pick up was worth the hit you take on gas mileage. I think you may still be able to get the '06 and probably with some great options at a discount. Hope this helps.

Re: XC90 buying help (GrecianVolvo)

Yannis, I live in PQ now. I too moved from the East a few years ago.

The OSD, I have done that once, but with a kink that I did not have to go to Sweden. I just had the car shipped to the dealer directly. I need to check if that's still possible.
SD Volvo has some incentives now, but I have not checked the inventory yet.
