Re: XC90 bolts torqued too much? What could go wrong? (tke148)

I'm curious what would happen if the XC90 bolts on the front wheels (get rid of axle ping) were tightened too much? Could this cause major problems? Please advise.
thanks.

Buy a $50 torque wrench and sleep well at night.

Like any bolt, it could snap if overtightened. Getting the broken piece out of the axle could be a major headache.

Bolt breakage usually only happens during the tightning process. If you've tightened it but it didn't break, do not go back and loosen it.

Or just stop by Dans house and get them installed in 5 min properly torqued http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: XC90 bolts torqued too much? What could go wrong? (Ride R)

Thanks Dan. I actually already put them in. I didn't torque them too tightly but don't have a torque wrench. I'm buying one soon. What is the proper torque?

The reason for asking is because I put the bolts in last week and drove the car to Stowe, VT (from NJ) and started hearing a weird noise like the bearings were going. Then it sounded like a slight catch and release from the differential. I took it to a shop up there and they said the differential may be slipping but it's safe to drive back (wondering if this is separate issue -- angle gear). I drove her back yesterday and it was okay. The noise I heard mostly came from when i took my foot off the gas pedal (like going down a hill). Kind of like a whomp, whomp, whomp noise but not very loud.

Any help would be greatly appreciated before having to go to the shop.

Thanks.

Tom

I have not completed this particular fix, but I do know that in general, you have to torque the living snot out of axle bolts. The torque procedure often seeks to stretch the bolts a predetermined amount.

They may be too loose and you are feeling the hubs slip. Best to get it properly torqued soon.

Should be torqued to 35Nm then angle tighten 120 degrees.
The first step is there to "snug" the assembly together (everything's metal-to-metal). The second step stretches the bolt into yield. It's now permanently deformed and not reuseable.

I think a guy could do an adequate job without a torque wrench if he estimated the first step and then carefully observed wrench position on the second step.

If you've never done this before, it can be nerve-wracking as you tighten the bejezus outta the bolt and feel it stretch as you twist it. You're just waiting for that horrible POP, but it doesn't happen.

PS Thanks for the torquing instructions. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif I'm going to save them for when it's my turn to do this.

Dan,

I think it may be better for me to come by some day soon since I really have no idea what you meant by angle tighten 120 degrees. I mean I think I know but I also thought I was doing it correctly the first time. lol

I'll send you an email.

Thanks.
Tom
