In the C70 forum there came some questions regarding the media players in the XC90 so I moved the topic to this forum.
Media players
In the XC90 you can choose between a single CD or a 6 disc CD changer in the dash. They can play CD, CD-R and CD-RW but not MP3. In addition to this you can also add a MiniDisc player that will sit on top of the CD player (that black hole under the display).
Speakers
Three levels of audio systems will be available (probably only two in the US). The top level (Premium Sound) will offer three-way system in the front, two-way centre speaker, coaxial speakers in the rear doors and tweeters in the D-pillars. A separate powered subwoofer will also be available.
Amplifiers
Or Audio Modules as we call them will be separate units containing all signal processing as well as amplification. As a first for Volvo the system will be completely digital with a DSP that takes care of all audio processing as Dolby Pro Logic II, limiter, speed dependent volume/EQ/dynamic compression, parametric EQ, bass, treble, subwoofer control etc.
Optical bus
Instead of a head unit the XC90 system is based on a high speed digital optical bus called MOST. Each function in the system is allocated to a separate node on the network, the only visible part is the master node that is integrated in the control panel. All other nodes (such as media players, audio modules, subwoofer, tuners, navi, telephone...) are "black boxes" that can be combined into different kinds of systems depending on the customers needs. All nodes are digital and can be upgraded with software download e.g. to enhance functionality or performance.
[This message has been edited by Audioguy (edited 06-17-2002).]

quote:
Originally posted by InDy:
Two question though, does the XC90 use HK/Mitsubish components and what kind of power is the system putting out?
-Drew

One of the main objectives with the distributed system is that we can choose the best supplier for each node, we can find the best media player supplier, the best amplifier supplier, the best tuner supplier etc, we don't have to find someone who is good at all these things (since they don't exist). So the XC90 audio system has a mix of different suppliers with Volvo as the system integrator. The speakers and powered sub comes from Harman, the audio module is from Alpine and the tuners and media players are supplied by Mistubishi Electric (Melco).
The three systems have 4x25, 4x40 and 4x70+25 Watts respectively, the powered sub has 150 Watts.
Regarding the XC90 display
There was also a question about the display in the XC90. It is a dot matrix display (64x128) but only in cars with Premium Sound and/or telephone. All other cars get an alphanumeric display (like in the HU radios) with 3 rows and 20 characters per row.
With the dot matrix display you get some simple pictures and nicer graphics e.g. when you navigate the menues, set the EQ, change source etc.

Do you have a part number? Would it also require a software update?
