Hi folks,

Anyone has any experience with 22’’ low profile wheels on Volvo XC90 R Design? Looking at purchasing a vehicle that is fitted with this size. Will they be ok on gravel or fire trail once in a while to get to a camping spot?

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Cheers from down under

22” is by default sold with summer performance tires.

Read into that what you will.

Have 22s for summer and winter. You'll be fine to get to the camping spot IF you avoid big potholes / bumps and don't drive like a madman. I've gotten dented rims from monster city potholes and highway potholes driving at speed, though none yet on the trail but I don't spend much miles out there, unfortunately.

I recommend bringing a full spare or at least some tire repair and a compressor with you just in case.

Enjoy!

Forgot to add: I bought a (USA only) rim / tire warranty that covered any damage. It has more than paid itself off after 1 or 2 (bent rim) damaged tires (if I recall the numbers correctly)! I recommend you look into that in your country.

I'm by no means a crazy driver or high mileage driver, just unlucky I guess.

Just keep the speed down to compensate for the lack of shock absorption from narrow sidewall tires and you should be ok.

get winter tires. the summer tires are useless if there is a little bit snow, gravel or mud (like a little off roading),

I downgraded to 20 inch all seasons and works much better and a more comfortable ride. Yes i did forgo a little bit of handling.

Thanks that was really helpful….
Summer performance tires are just that. Summer performance tires. They’re meant to provide the best performance on warm roads. Similar to the performance tires you’d see on a sports car, just SUV size.

Expect to get the same results off road as you would if you saw one of those blinged out pickup trucks with low profile street tires on on a trail.

Shori, I have had 2 xc90 both with 22” standard p zero summer tires. We live rural and travel down gravel roads everyday. We also frequent the Snowy mountains summer and winter and have only had a little slip once during a blizzard but got us safely up and down the mountain. We then swapped out the p zero to an all season 22” on the stock r design rim in a 285 and it’s been great. Been down many a large pot hole at speed and no damaged rims. I have also driven many fire trails in the alpine area and off road mode does exceptionally well.
Our 2016, had standard springs, but 2021 has air suspension. Highly recommended, but comes standard on the recharge r design.
Is that thunder grey on the xc90 you are looking at getting? I gather it’s a T6/B6, with the front fog lights?

Thanks for sharing the above. Much appreciated.
It’s an ex-demo T6 in Thunder Grey with air suspension and B&W speakers. We were actually in the market for an Inscription, but this turned up in the budget. So, we decided to go for the R Design.

Very nice mate👍 looks like a great spec. The b&w sound system and air suspension are 2 of my favourite features. Hope you enjoy the new ride

I have 22" summer wheels and 20" winter wheels. Just swapped to the 20" yesterday. I experience very small to no difference in ride comfort (Maybe thanks to the Air suspension)
Stay away from all seasons tires IMO, since they ,almost always, have bad brake performance during summer.

Wait. ****ty is a censored word? Omg. Rofl.

Nice car you found btw. R-design in thunder grey is really nice. And you get air suspension and b&w. The most important options. :)(y)

Beautiful R-Design and great color! I think you just sold me on Thunder for a Polestar2 I was just configuring!

BTW, on the tires, if you typically have to or do air down on the trails you drive to go camping, then 22" may be a little on the thin side as they won't give you much comfort or margin on trails. If you're able to drive them without airing down, and they're just gravel roads, you'll likely be fine. Just don't go too fast.

We have 20" and do typically air down. Once I was having a little too much fun and a rock put a large enough slash in the tread that a plug wouldn't work. Our older XC90 went to the rescue to fetch a spare.

Purchased mine in 2016 (2017 MY) with 22" running 285/35 r22 tires (all season Continental's). Never had any problems with them and I drive up logging roads/forest roads all of the time in some remote areas of the Pacific Northwest. I take these over the passes in the Cascades during winter and spend a lot of time driving in snowy conditions in Whistler, B.C. I've been able to get through a couple of feet of snow with these in Leavenworth as well. I have had a slice to the tire from a construction zone but Discount Tire, where I got them, replaced it for free. You'll need low profile z cables if you want a chain/cable option.

Probably late responding to this post, but I have 22" and take it camping with zero problems. Potholes are worse, but being careful I have never had any problems in 4 years living in Potholecity.

I have 19" in the winter and they are more comfortable due to the bigger sidewall, but I love the looks of the 22".
