Just wondering if anyone has any info on the roof strength of the xc70? A friend of mine pointed out today the 'flimsiness' of the roof of my my06 xc70.
Thanks

Weight limit is in your owner's manual.
Oz

I checked the manual, and it gives the max roof load (for carrying). I was wondering the overall structural strength in terms of roll-over protection for vehicle occupants.
thanks

can't give you data, but I believe Volvos are famous for their roof strength. Not too many other cars I'd want to be in if I roll over. And finally Volvo is putting real stability control (not STC but DSTC) standard on all cars starting '07, so the chances of needing that roof strength will go down

Somewhere in the archives there's a photo of a V70 with a semi tank trailer sitting on the roof. I've searched and can't find it. Maybe one of the gurus will post a link. That picture IS worth a thousand words.

Re: xc70 roof strength (Steely)

Bumpers appear weak to people when they touch them, but what we all call bumpers are simply bumper covers. The often times foam stuffed palstic covers will bend inward to dissipate crash energy, but the bumper itself will be metal. I'm sure the roof is the same. The actual metal structure of the roof is very solid, but it has space to "give".

The roof structure (as well as other main structural components) is re-enforced with boron steel - MUCH higher tensile strength steel then most US manufactures (including parent company Ford) use. The shell of any car is relatively thin sheet metal and does not provide much of the car's strength. What is your friend refering to as "flimsiness" and compared to what?

In Europe a lot of police cars are Volvo's. One of the reasons is the strong roof needed to "carry" the sirens, flashlights etc.
Pedro
