XC70 Newbee -- Please help

Hi all:

Just picked up '05 XC70 with 35k for my wife and young daughter. If anyone could help with any or all of the following, I would really appreciate it! I have about 45 days of warranty coverage left, so I'm trying to sort out any potential issues quickly.

GLOVEBOX RATTLE AT IDLE: I was able to find some great hints here. Sounds like a common problem -- I'll have dealer look at, and resort to some felt pads or the like if it reappears after warranty expires. If anyone has anything to add...

ENGINE CONTINUES TO RUN for a minute after I shut the car down. I'm assuming that it's just the fan and that this is a stupid question. I've never had a car that's done this before -- a Volvo thing?

AFTERMARKET STEEL CARGO ORGANIZER? This looks like a great way to keep gear from ending up front and keeping baby girl safe (not to mention Fido out of the cabin). Dealer quoted me $350. Ouch. Anyone know of an aftermarket alternative that will fit the holes on the cargo area and filp up like the OEM model. Anyone have this installed? Thoughts?

TIRE RECC. Putting new rubber on. Leaning Goodyear Assurance Tripletred - great reviews on TireRack, but pricey.

CARSEAT installation. Admittedly not a sexy question... Want to install my forward facing toddler seat in the center but use LATCH system (Dads, you know what I mean). It seems that the car is set to use LATCH just on the drivers or passengers side. If I borrow one latch hook from either side, now I've invaded enough into the space beside it that passengers seatbelts overlap. Am I missing something here? Or am I just stuck keeping my seat out of the middle section of the bench.

OTHER KNOWN WARRANTY issues I should have looked at before it expires. This car is known for solid reliability, which is why I bought it, but I'd rather catch stuff while it's still on Volvo's dime.

Thanks!

You're got the right mindset here. Not much to add.

That's a fan cooling the ECU. Not an issue. A Volvo thing.

There's a removable mesh version as well that's cheaper. I don't know of an aftermarket solution. eBay would be my first stop to avoid the full sticker price. Darrell Waltrip Honda Volvo and Boston Volvo Village are also options for discounted new OEM.

Sorry, no LATCH in the middle. I have no idea why.

Things were pretty well sorted by MY05 (this car was introduced in 2001 and had AWD updates in 2003), so nothing major comes to mind. You might check the upper motor mount and lower transmission mount, as they can fail early. Also make sure the turbo comes on as expected: the other known fail is with the turbo control valve (TCV).

For the three above items, heavy-duty aftermarket solutions exist. They're not free like a warranty replacement, but they sure last longer.

If you're the industrious type, you can take the glovebox out and bend the catch back a little so it pulls tighter. But if not, the felt pads are a fine solution.

Thanks to all who responded! Just took her out in the snow here in Colorado, initial thoughts are that it is much more stable than my 4Runner -- about on par with F150 in the white stuff.

In a crash the Volvo steel cage will keep your dog from coming though and crushing your daughter (and you). It can actually withstand an incredibly high load (which is why is costs what it does). The ebay ones do not have the strength to prevent this, use at your own risk.

Latch fitment design also has angle load factors, the standard side positions keep these in spec, putting the seat between the two will not keep it in spec. Not a gamble I'd take with my daughter's car seat.

Re: XC70 Newbee -- Please help (jakefitz)

As for LATCH or (ISO fix) Do Not use one hook from each side to fasten your car seat in the middle location.

I have read that using the seat belt is much stronger and safer than Latch. Latch is only rated to a certain weight as well. The seat belt is rated for adults and holds well like a seat belt should.

I currently have my daughter in the middle using the seat belt (which has its own locking thingy built in by pulling it out all the way) and the seat is really held tight.

If you have any questions about the install take your car and seat to your local fire department and have a trained person install it or review your install.
