A nuvi could fit there nicely. Only problem is that I rarely use our Nuvi and I really don't want a nav system staring me in the face all the time and maybe even inviting a smashed window and theft. IMO, Volvo's old design with the pop up screens really was the best design out there, unfortunately, i thought it was WAY overpriced and vastly underfeatured and burdened with an inferior screen.
One possibility is that maybe those who designed the dash were assuming that by the time they got here, Volvo would actually be able to offer a nav/audio integrated system. One screen that can show nav, audio, ac, etc. It seems almost everybody else, at least everybody I can think of, already offers this. Is volvo the ONLY company left that still basically has a stand alone nav system? And I'm not talking about integration with audio muting or steering wheel buttons. I mean a nav system whose screen can show other vehicle functions besides JUST nav and backup camera. Then they wouldn't have needed that stupid pod on the dash. It looks like the dash (excluding the pod) got ahead of volvo and in the end volvo stuffed the dash with all their old electronics and had to add that pod for the audio/ac display.
Still, it would be nice if they had a slightly bigger, nicer audio/ac display for non-nav cars that could go where the nav would be instead of keeping the audio/ac up top. As a plus, non-nav cars would then look better than nav cars since they wouldn't need the pod.
A good installer might even be able to remove the screen from the pod, put it into the blank, and fashion a center channel speaker grille to replace the pod plastic. Although that display is kind of small for all that empty flat plastic.
