Hello,
I registered today and don't (yet) own a Volvo. I'm interested in buying a 1995-1998 850 or S70 with the 5-speed manual transmission. My budget is a mere $3500 but condition and mileage are flexible. I'm located in northern Indiana but will travel ~200 miles in any direction, so anything in Chicago, Indy, Detroit, Cleveland, etc... is fair game. Must be a sedan, preferably non-turbo. If you have one or know of one please let me know - reply ot email me at [email protected] Thanks!

Re: WTB: 1993-1998 850/S70 manual transmission (TurboR850)

There is one I'm looking at, a '97 with ~115k on the clock. Odometer doesn't work, looks like this is common and cheap to repair myself. Carfax checks out. ABS light is on. Don't know about the timing belt, I'm waiting on a response. It's listed for $2,500, I'm thinking about offering $2,000 based on the issues it has, What might the ABS light be on for? Ad says the regular brakes work fine.
If I can get the issues fixed for less than $3500 total, I'll more than likely go for it. How can I get the actual mileage on the car (I saw there was a way but it wasnt clear and I cant find it now anyway).

That light is most likely the module. ABS module repair by Victor Rocha is about $130 and less than a week turnaround time. Do a search on here or Volvospeed.

actual mileage will be imprinted on the ECU. have dealer read it and adjust odometer accordingly.

I'm now the proud owner of some fine swedish steel.

Cost me $2,500.
The good:
Came with all records since 2005, and was always serviced at the dealership.
Tires have a lot of tread on them, and the brake pads and rotors are in excellent shape
(almost) Everything works
heater/evap core was replaced last year to the tune of $1,500. Above reading verified through carfax, will be verified again by the dealer when I fix it. I plan on buying replacement parts here.
ABS/traction light are on. I will either send it to this guy since this seems to be a common problem, or going through my father, who works at Bosch, the maker of the module. Either way, it won't cost a lot.
radio doesn't work most of the time. I'll probably be replacing it anyway. Not sure what we'll be doing with this yet.
I think the alloy wheels it came with are stupid looking.
The car isn't without problems, but a tuneup and fixing the above issues should cost about $400-$500. Well within the $1100 I have budgeted for fixing it up.
The car wants to be loved. After we bought it, I opened the hood in front of a Home Depot I stopped at, and french fries fell out from the underhood liner. Then, I was digging through the back seat, and found two fake rolexes and a third watch of unknown make. I also found a book on CD. It's the car that keeps on giving!
My wife is very happy with our purchase. The car is a huge difference from the Mini she had but she doesn't mind at all.

Re: (DWBF1)

I'd rather have the 5-speed than the turbo, since I can't have both (and don't want to do a swap).
Besides, it's the wife's car, I need it to be cheap and reliable and slow.
I'm about to order $200 worth of tune-up parts from ipd to get the car running to my standards.
