Well, I have a tough decision to make. At least I think it's tough...
I recently was gauking at one of my friend's WRX's when he dropped me off, and then hopped into my 850 and followed him. Or at least tried to, wow! those things are quick. Anyways, my 850 could barely keep up with his WRX.
Now on to the topic at hand... my dad considered for me to trade in my 1996 850 t-5 and get a 2002 WRX. Tough decision.
I drove the WRX, and it feels a little plasticky, but has great pickup to compensate for that. It doesn't have a sunroof, but has a nice, tightly shifting gearbox to make up for that... The interior seems a little plasticky, but to make up for that you have all your gauges, and everything you NEED for everyday driving... or racing! The only other thing is that it has cloth interior, that would be the first thing I would change out. MOMO seats, here I come!
It's competition, the 850. What a car, I have about $2000 invested into it right now, and it is in prestine condition with 85000 miles on the odo.
Now, I have the choice between these two cars. It's a tough decision, I was hoping you guys could help me out with it.
BTW, I know the WRX is a r1ce rocket you guys, but DAMN... that r1ce rocket FLIES!!! haha
O ya, and don't worry about being really really harsh, I need to hear all the worst and the best of your opinions.
As always, thanks

I can do plenty of that... but what do you think about the WRX?
BTW, the STi version of the WRX is supposed to be coming over next year. Supposidely it has 276 HP in Japan, and 261 HP in Europe. That's due to a larger intercoller, higher boost pressure, and variable valve timing. It also has a 6-speed manual gearbox, Brembo brakes, and a quick-ratio sterring rack. Also, those sweet molded lights by prodrive Style. Watch out S60R...

Wait for the S60R AWD, you want HP and AWD get this car it will come. And leather seats are in this one from the start, you would not have to do a thing to this machine. The Subaru will not be as safe as the Volvo, the way you seem to drive this may be something to think about, it is a situation none of us want to be in but S--- happens and put my ass in a Volvo or a Benz and I will be happy! Still I do give the Subaru credit for its rally history and performance.

Thanks Kai for the input, you have a point about the safety, and Benz and Volvo are a few of the strongest cars in this category. I'm just thinking that with the age & mileage of the car I have, 96 with 85000 miles. I know it's not much for a Volvo, but soon it will be in the triple digits, and for any car, that really lowers the value.
The one reason I wouldn't consider the Evo7 or S60R is because of the $$$ it would cost to get one. I mean, sure that would be a great graduation gift! haha... realistically thinking, it would never happen.
Once again, thanks

I say tune your 850 T-5 and give it one more try... believe me spark plug, wires, oil change, and distrubtor cap is a lot cheaper than buying 2002 WRX.
The one I ran into understands Speed Kills!!
James
PS. Thanks George!

I just bought some magnecor performance wires, I'll put them on tonight, I have platinum +4 in the car right now. As for distributor cap, I'm not quite sure about what you're talking about.
Thanks for the advice
How did you hold up against that WRX?

Do the wires, plugs and distributor cap really help that much. I mean we all know that tune ups are a must on these cars, and the hotter and better the spark, the better these turbo engines "put out" just let me know what you think.
PS, i know the wires are a bit above 200, but the cap and plugs are a total of what 80?
Thanks,
David
850 T-5R Sedan

Guys, I'm trying to figure out this distributor cap thing, I got an oil change yesterday, it was about time. I'm going to race my buddy after school today. Let's see if I have a chance against his WRX. I just installed my spark plug wires last night, it has a more immediate pick up, they do make a little bit of a difference.

What's a distributor cap???
Thanks guys, I'll tell you if I hold up with him this time.

The distribultor is the piece the wires hook into. If you open it up, you will see the rotor inside. If it's brown, or especially black, you'll want to replace it (carbon build up, etc). The distributor itself, however, I am not sure as to when you would want to replace that, though I do it every third or so tune up.
Matt

JHE, I am a mechanic, and recently have had the opportunity to work on a few WRXs. On one I did a turbo upgrade, 3" exhaust, silicon intake hoses, chip, fuel pump and injectors, and it has a cold air intake. This car put down 277HP at the wheels. That's all 4 wheels...should equate to about 360 or so at the crank. This car is FAST I don't think the WRX is a **** rocket, unless you put stupid blue lights and crap on it. If you keep the exterior stock, you can really scare some people!
Rob

Okay Guys,
Why are we still talking about the WRX? JHE, if you want a true **** rocket, why don't you purchase a 1998 - 1994 Toyota Supra. Factory Spec: 320hp, twin turbo, 5 speed Manual, RWD.
If you going to get make a tough decision, make one that makes really counts. I have seen these Toyota's tuned up to 1000hp and still driven on the street - on pumped gas!
Know this is a **** rocket, not a WRX!
