I wanted to know if having two sets of different tires on a S60R would have an adverse effect on the AWD system and on its performance?
This question is actually for my buddy who needs to replace two tires on his S60R. He is unable to get the same make and model of his current tires due to manufacturing and distribution issues. BTW, he’s running on 18” Pegs (235-40-18)
Point being, if he only changes two of his tires, not only will the tread wear be different but the make an model as well.
Does unequal tread wear have an effect?
Does different tread pattern (performance rating) have an effect?
Is this a problem?
I appreciate your advice.
Cheers,

It is not advisable to run different treadwear on the same axle, and especially on an AWD system.
I would think tread depth difference is more substantial than tread pattern.

The question is: would your friend prefer to risk having expensive AWD repairs by trying to save several hundred in tires?
Really it is an R not 1989 Ford Tempo ( my apologies to any Tempo fans)

As suggested by Phuz, the biggest consideration is the outer diameter of the new tires vs. the old tires.
If, for example, you replace the front tires with brand new tires that have an outer diameter that is sufficiently larger than the rear tires (due to slightly different tire dimensions between brands/models or due to wear on the old tires that haven't been replaced) then the front tires will have to rotate slower in order to cover the same distance of the rear tires. This difference in rotation speed between the front and rear axles will cause the AWD system to be activated in an attempt to correct it, thereby putting undue strain on the AWD system.
I can't recall off the top of my head what the acceptable difference in outer diameters might be, but I would just spring for the full set of new tires.
Cheers,
J

Thanks guys for all your input.
My buddies’ assumption was that he should probably change all 4 tires as well. We figured that the uneven tread depth, or tire wear, would probably affect the AWD system, but I just wanted to get the opinion of some of the SS members to confirm our original assumption.
Thanks again,
Cheers,
