Worth rebuilding a LPT turbo?

My turbo is leaking/seeping on my 2.4 LPT XC70. I know this isn't a big deal in and of itself (crap the turbo on my 20k mile R was "seeping" and was noted as normal by Volvo) but the car has 220k miles on it. Assuming original turbo it's likely at some point it will need replacement.

The other day I was at a local JY and they have an identical car to mine. I picked what I could get off the car myself in the rain/mud while I was there but since then I've been thinking about other parts I might try and get to have on hand before the car is completely gone. One of which is the turbo. If it's in good shape, great - but my thoughts were to buy it and have it rebuilt so I have one waiting and ready to go when the time comes. I'm hoping I can get the turbo for ~$100. Is it worth paying that and then paying to send it out and have it rebuilt/balanced?

Looks like a replacement is about $500 from places like eeuroparts.com.

Alternatively decent looking units are available on ebay for a couple of hundred.

Does anyone know how much it costs to have one rebuilt? Is it worth doing or should I just snatch up a good used unit and shelve it until the time comes?

Whatever turbo you end up with, short of being new I would rebuild. The cost of a rebuild kit is negligible for a piece of mind. Also, you can do the rebuild yourself with basic hand tools. Granted you won't be able to balance it but if you mark the impeller wheel you can align is same as it was before.

Rebuild is always going to be cheaper. Mitsu td04 rebuild kits can be had for about $85-$100...if you are handy you can assemble DIY. From there its a matter of getting it balanced at the shop/builder of your choice. Price for balancing varies, I've seen upwards of $250 round trip with reputable online places. Id plan for $100 minimum

It may also be a good time to upgrade if so inclined...2.4t is 13t iirc, you could go to a 14t and possibly 16t, but dont quote me on that. To make the most of it though youd have to get a tune..

13T, 14T, pretty much the same same. Turbo upgrades are fun and all, but best bang-for-buck upgrade is a Stage 1 tune on on a bone stock vehicle, which I feel most people would be happy and safe with.

I thought about it but not really interested in boosting performance. I'm satisfied with the way it runs now. Not looking to create more problems for myself by throwing extra horsepower at a drivetrain with 200k miles on it.

See, I like being able to hold power further up, while still having a decent amount of torque. Makes for a better highway car. Will has one for me to install, essentially planning on an XC70T5...Maybe a Snabb intake pipe if I finally get around to the project, but then I'm dreaming lol.

What I don't like is that it loses its push around 4500 rpm on the 14T. It seems choked and wheezy just to get there as well (that could be another issue however). The 16T I had on the 850 was smooth all the way up to 6k and still got me off the line quickly.

Now a 19T or higher would really take away from the feel of the XC. Not sure I'd ever do that, and if I wanted a car for that purpose I'd buy an R model ;)

I have to check your car out at Carlisle this year. The thread you have at the offroad forum with the popup pics makes me curious after looking at the build thread here

Do it and join the club.... It's totally worth it.

I'm doing the same thing. I'm waiting on some additional parts before I put it all in. Still looking to rebuild my 16T.
