had noticed squeeling noises coming from the rear wheels since this weekend so i popped off my rear tires for an inspection. holly poop, pads worn down to the metal and rotors chewed about 1/8". this is the REAR! the fronts were still 50%. so went to my local volvo dealer and picked up the parts and they stated this is normal wear.
in all my life, i never have heard the rear brakes worn out prior the front. anyone have had this problem yet?
Re: worn out brakes (volvos40t5)

How many miles do you have?
My brakes started squeeling a bit after I had the left pull fixed a couple of months ago. Only seems to happen during creeping braking, and only soon after startup.

No "problems" with the brakes. Although, the brake dust on my rear wheels far exceeds the dust on the front wheels.

I heard a squeeking noise from my car and went to my mechanic who said that the rear brakes were wearing faster than the front. He said this was unusual.
The noise stopped and I have not replaced them.

Perhaps chack your handbrake mechanism. It may be dragging slightly, hence the fast wear on the pads.

If You read the fine print in the Owner's Manual and sales brochures it says Volvo's Electronic Assisted braking system, (I forget the achronym they use) increases braking force on the rear to prevent nose dive under hard braking. Past discussions have shown 25,000 miles is about maximum life for rear pads. My driving is about 99.9+% all interstate so I expect (hopefully) a few more miles than that. My old truck got 251,000 miles out of it's brakes.

Re: worn out brakes (gargantula99)

The brakes were designed to stop 20,000#. I drove 99% highway and didn't tow much so only had to stop 6500#. Truck was My daily driver and when You can drive 55 miles out of a 60-65 mile commute with no stops brakes last a L-O-N-G time. There were 2-3 other Guys on Dieselstop.com with similar trucks that got even more miles from the factory brakes than I did. One had 285,000 and was still going.

I too just replaced my rear brake pads about two weekes ago at 38k miles. Just like your's, the rear pads were down to just about metal to metal. The front barely show any wear. And just like you, I drive in L.A. traffic every day.

Re: worn out brakes (lrosales)

Since my 1998 Camaro, all cars that I have owned apply the rear brake first, the Camaro actually has bigger disk in the rear (11.7" front, 11.9" rear) a little tidbit for you'al. So yes brake pads wear very quickly in the rear and on my VW, on my Volvo V40, I had change the rear pads within 2years. and no OEM that I know of outside of the Camaro has designed pads and disk that will take the rear bias load, you just gotta change them, takes like 1 hour and $40.00 from Autozone for lifetime pads....
