It could have been read between the lines in most articles.
Now there are two UK reviews which tell where it stands for.
6 months before it's introduction general conclusion is that the new R missed it's targeted audience...
It's a dog, specially the AT. A car not for the sportive driver but for them seeking comfort.
Comfort 4C setting to soft, advance sport way to hard.
Read most reviews very carefully, even the ones which may sound positive, and general conclusion is that the R can't live up to it's promise.
One thing I did find very peculiar, always some kind of punchline when the price is being mentioned....
There no official price yet, 4C is all electronics which still can be set they way people want it.
Volvo still can save some of the R's reputation by listening to the R audience.
Re: Word is out, R is an overexpensive dog..... (Johann)

Heh, I still want one more than ANY other car
The truth is one of the biggist problems people had with the 850R was the supension was too harsh, most people that bought them did so becuase it was top of the line, not becuase it was high preformance, and so they ended up changing the wheels to 16's or even 15's. Most people arn't like us they just want the top of the line car, they don't want to mod it afterwards.

I am going out on a limb here since I have not driven this car, yet. But...what do you guys expect out of the R???? Some sort of an exotic and super car? It is a quicker T5 with some advanced electronics plus AWD....It is not a 370+HP hot rod! I think people have raised their expectations way too high and that is why they are "disappointed"!
Yannis

Re: Word is out, R is an overexpensive dog..... (Johann)

What's the expected curb weight of the new R? My expectations for the car is that it would still feel much like my 854, which makes something like 275hp w/the current stuff, but the new car's added hp being offset by additional mass.
The thing I like is that it has a very nice awd system... b/c I've been wishing that I'd bought that A6 2.7t that I'd almost bought instead of the 854T. At least, now that we've got snow here, that is.
So, I'm not expecting it to run w/an M3, but for sure I'd expect it to best an A6 in many areas. Oh, wait, it prolly won'd do a 1/4 in the 12s, so I don't want it.

Re: Word is out, R is an overexpensive dog..... (Kaizai)

I owned an 850R and didn't find it too harsh, though I didn't opt to make it any harsher either.
Correct me if I am wrong, but there are three settings on the suspension, and if one's too hard and one's too soft, then I'm guessing it's the medium one people will use most of the time if their suspension tastes are anything like the reporters.
I like the idea of having the choices and would probably opt for that harsher ride. Oh well.
As for all out performance.... the R has some tough competition in the M3 and the S4. Those cars are all V8s now though, leaving the turbocharged world for Volvo. I have high hopes...... I'll wait to drive it.

The clearly liked the "Sport" setting and did not say anythign negative about the "Comfort" setting.
As far as price, 33.000 British Pounds (+2.000 for teh V70R) is right where it was expected...
Do you think that 0-62mph at 5.4secs is bad? I don't know....I think that we expect too much out of the R models even before they came out...
Yannis

I too read the CAR articles and they seemed to like the S60R and the V70R. I was a little surprised by the the estimated cost; 35K pounds puts it at $56k. I was expecting mid to high 40s. Now we're starting to get close to an S6, which is a monster!
Craig

Brother! Buy what turns you on, but to me that 5.4 0-60 time doesn't cut it at that price. A Boxter or modded out cheaper volvo machine would be better use of money. Besides, the reduced durability of an overstressed engine package is a potential negative resale issue.

In that case, get the new Cobra. No understeering, lots of power. And much cheaper any of these European competitors.

my 1/2 cent - where else are you going to buy a luxury/sport $45k USD AWD wagon with that kind of performance?
Just one that I can think of: 2000-2001 S4 Avant bi-turbo
-- not sure if Saab offered a Viggen wagon with that kind of performance
If you want/need a wagon and not a two seater sub- 6sec performance is excellent....sub 7sec is very good.
The Subaru WRX wagon is a little small and in different class but offers sub 6 sec. 0-60. Europe probably has other wagons with similar performance but here in the US there are very few if any.
If the automatic V70R is a 6.5sec to 60 & mid 14 sec 1/4 mile, that would put in line with the previous Bi-Turbo S4 Avant w/ Tiptronic - plenty of get-up-and-go.

Like you say, the WRX soob is cheap, fast, with lots of available aftermarket items, and would be a very practical substitute. But I wouldn't want to be inside it with a collision so far as I know, that model is not too sturdy. The new Imprezia and foresters though are solidly built when I last examined them and checked the highway safety websites for collision data.

You are berating a car that will do 0-60 in the mid-5s??? A FAMILY sedan and a...WAGON, for God sakes???? Don't you understand that Volvo's intention is not to compete with the Boxsters, Schmoxters and what not? Don't you understand that the R models are an a l t e r n a t i v e for th FAMILY man/woman who want something different? Something that will still be COMFORTABLE, something that will still be SAFE, something that will be SPORTIER than the current Volvos offered and something that will also give you the benefit of AWD... Don't you think that Volvo could design a RWD Coupe or a RWD sport sedan and really beef it up? They are staying under the current format with all its pros and cons... Please! Let's wait until these Rs get here and let's appreciate them for what they intend to be; something more exclusive over what is being offered right now but within the TARGET MARKET which consists of F A M I L I E S!!!
Jeez Louise!!!!

Yannis

Lighten it up just a wee GrecianVolvo! We aren't talking about your mother or children....... or are we? There's no shortage of people interested in the R. I know a guy who's already put down his money on one. Your advice will be heeded by even the immediate skeptics such as myself, still a volvo fan.

What Chris Said................ You Go Bro......
In February of 2000 our Branch tested '00, V70 XCs for potential supplemental mobility platforms.(Fed talk for sedan replacements) We are very truck and interceptor heavy in the Crisis Response business.
After Winter testing was completed in the Wasatch Range of Utah, Home to the 2002 Winter Games, Volvo N.A. and Don Beyer Volvo, Alexandria delivered them to the FBI Academy for track testing. We were fortunate to get SAAB N.A. to bring down a 9-3 Viggen, a 9-5 Aero Wagon and Sedan for a head-to-head.
The Aero Wagon was sweet, great power.......Viggen had major torque steer issues, incredible handler under way......Aero Sedan was awesome, windows up, it out ran our 5.7L Caprice Interceptor(Corvette engined).
In the end, the low pressure turbo XCs were thought, by a majority of Agents that sampled all of the contestants, to be superior.
For several years Volvo N.A. has put a T-5 sedan and wagon against all comers in the Michigan State Police, Patrol Vehicle Testing/Evaluation Program. I've been sorting it out since then and continue to use my personnal owned ride as a test bed for Crisis Response.
