Windshield replacement, Volvo glass vs. NAGS

Insurance is replacing my windshield but is giving me the money for NAGS windshield and Volvo adhesive. I wanted Volvo glass but the price is $600 vs NAGS $225. I have been told that the windshield replacement industry is as easy to understand as the blling procedures of the Healthcare industry. I have been assured that the glass is the same as Volvo minus the stickers. I'm not so sure.

Anyone have their windshield replaced?
What was it replaced with?
What is NAGS?

Tell them these windshields do not meet Volvo safety standards in combination with the airbag system. Warranty will be voided also. Let them sign a paper taking full responsibility.

The glass isn't the same. The "Glue" area isn't as strong, the windshield will pop out in case the passenger airbag deploys against the windshield making it a useless balloon. Also make sure the rain sensor cut out is in there.

i can't imagine the circumstances where i would allow an insurance company to install a non volvo windshield as a replacement in any volvo i owned. i would pay the difference if the insurance company absolutely would not pay, then i'd dump the company and the agency that sold it to me and get a real insurance company and an agency that cared about me and my life.

Mine (Chubb) paid for OEM glass, there wasn't even a question

Johann hit the nail on the head. There IS a difference between OEM Volvo windshields and aftermarket windshields. There is NO WAY I would allow my vehicle to be replaced with a non-Volvo windshield.

They're an insurance company . . . THIS is what you pay your premiums for. MAKE them pay for it.

Re: Windshield replacement, Volvo glass vs. NAGS (R Salesman)

I have used both. I found that the OEM glass works better than the others because of the quality of the glass. I am no expert in the glass business but I did notice that after 40,000 miles with OEM glass on my BMW it was like new. Then I did what you are contimplating and went with the "cheaper glass" and put 7,000 miles on and the glass was "pitted" so bad that It had a "halo" affect at night from all of the small pits in the cheaper glass. When I pointed this out to the glass company they said "with the cheaper glass you can expect to replace it at least twice as often compared to OEM, because of the quality". I hope this helps. Rick

Do you know this for a fact?

Who cares about ~fact~! Let them provide YOU with the facts that this statement is FALSE. I'd insist on OEM!

The OEM glass may be better in many ways but man does it ever collect pits like nothing else I've owned.

V70R, first developed a large crack and was replaced, second showed two small cracks/stars but wasn't replaced.

S60R one small crack 3 days after I received the car...

Most Euro glass is prone to pitting, more so than US and japanese cars, why I do not know
German glass is the WORST

20K miles and the glass is junk
I'm going to replace the glass in my 99 in the Spring, I can't even see out of it in the morning and evening sun it's so pitted.

Re: Windshield replacement, Volvo glass vs. NAGS (JRL)

I need the glass replaced beacuse the pits on it blind me in the sun. Good thing its gray and raining in Oregon for now.

If I absolutely have to I will pay any difference to get OEM glass. The rest of the claim is for ALL volvo parts from the bumper to the roof. They are all pitted too.

My biggest concerns are Warranty, mine is good for 100K. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
Safety. Hard to say I told you so if the glass pops out and you go over the airbag and through the window.

Features. I have a rainsensor and rain coating and don't want to lose that.

Where is the antenna? Is it in the glass too?

Re:

I had a crack a while back (there's a thread on it). Replaced it with Pilkington glass. 4K miles later, less pits than OEM. There's no visible difference other than it saying Pilkington instead of Volvo with all the mumbo jumbo on the glass. Rain sensor cutout is there as well, including all the funny little black dots, to the T.

Re: Windshield replacement, Volvo glass vs. NAGS (opus)

Just a couple of months ago, when renewing my R's auto coverage, I got one of the now familiar "modification" documents from the insurance company (State Farm) stating that they are not obligated to pay for OEM glass. Every renewal includes changes to the terms, always for lesser coverage, of course. It slowly erodes over time.

You can get all the coverage back, of course, by calling up, renegotiating, and then paying more money.

I doubt that "NAGS" glass is the same as Volvo's. It's probably made to the same basic specs, but not from the same manufacturer. With many components -- such as the windshield -- the tiny differences between the factory part and the reverse-engineered part do indeed matter. With others, it doesn't. Depends on how much it matters to you, really.
