My 1999 S70 has about 120k on it.
today, the windows won't work and the sunroof won't work either.
i popped the hood and checked the fuse box. i coudln't locate a fuse in the fuse box that appeared to control the windows/sunroof.
i looked in the manual and it said there is a fuse in the main fuse box that controls windows and sunroof. i popped the main fuse box lid and the fuse layout seemed similar but slightly different than the pic in the manual. the manual also said to not change out the main fuses and just take it to the dealer.
great...
i'm assuming that i either have a bad fuse or a bad switch. if i stop the car, let it sit, and restart it, i momentarily got the window to work - but only for a split second, then it all dies. not sure what that means.
any suggestions?

Re: Windows and Sunroof won't work (23109VC)

From the way it sounds, you may have a window switch that is stuck in the up position and is causing the breaker to open. There could also be a short in one of the doors as well.
You could pull out the switches from the windows and power up the car...check to see if the sunroof is working or not. If it is...then you've elliminated the sunroof. Now move on to each window, starting with the driver's and working to the front passenger window. You will need the main switch (driver's door) and the switch going to the window you're looking to operate in place for anything to operate. If you are able to get your front windows working along with the sunroof...then the rear windows have an issue.
If none of this works, then there is an issue before the relays and switches...and could get troublesome to trace.
Good luck and cheers,
Prospero

Re: Windows and Sunroof won't work (Prospero)

while trying to figure out what was going wrong, I started the car up and using the drivers door switch, i was able to depress the button for the driver's window and it went down...but jsut for a second. then it stopped. the window went down maybe 3 inches. i stopped/started the car again several tiems and finally i managed to get it back up...but then it would nto go down again....
maybe it's a bad switch tripping the fuse?

I don't know if you really found the problem. I would try doing the same to any other window first and see if you can duplicate the issue. Odds are that you're just seeing the breaker open and leave you with no power. More than likely you will see the same thing on all windows...so by pulling the switches in my above mentioned post...you're going about it via means of ellimination.
Now if I'm not mistaken...the breaker is under the fuse box lid whereas you will need to unscrew the 4 torx guys and lift off the cover. Down towards the bottom will be 3-4 silver boxes...those are the breakers...
Good luck and cheers,
Prospero

A broken master door switch can lead to many very weird problems and the symptoms are always different

Pretty steep considering a replacement master switch at FCP Groton is $119 and the switches are fairly easy to pop out and replace (the 'bone' tool from IPD works great for this).
