The current SPA S60 wheelbase, weight, and footprint put the car practically into mid-size territory. That's before we get to the driving dynamics, which very few have described as sporty. Some might consider the T8 to have enough horsepower and torque to be considered a "performance" vehicle.
The P3 S60 was always a little large for the compact segment of its time, with a longer wheelbase than the competition, and a bigger footprint. Still, T6 versions, and even some T5s, are very convincing as a sporty compact sedan.
In the past we had the C70, the C30, and the v40 (which never came to America, RIP). Both the C30 and V40 had sporting pretensions, and/or at least made an effort to be a premium part of the segment with plussed-up HP and turbo.
That's to say nothing of the S60R and hot wagons.
The C40 might have the proper wheel base, but I'm not sure I would describe it as sporty. The EX30 feels like it will be too cheap to be a premium segment entry. You don't put soundbars on the dash of something you expect to be autocrossed. It's also, IDK, a CUV, which to me is disqualifying on its face.
Is Volvo done making sporty compact cars? Will they ever make another car that's fun to drive and that doesn't come in 5 shades of grey?
