Re: Why Teenage Girls Should'nt Drive XC90's (Copeland)

sorry about that, teenagers in general should not drive new cars, I was one of those statistics and crashed a new car about 6 months or so into a tree after loosing it in the snow. Back then Japanese tires were not worth a dime, and the car was RWD but it was still my fault, too fast in the snow.

Hitting something like that is easy to understand. My wife often compares the turning radius to the Queen Mary...
Add lack of judgement due to inexperience plus reduced visibility on the right hand side, salted with a bit of overconfidence in their own skills, and it can easily yield a scratched door like that.
Hope you are making her pay at least part of the repair. There is nothing more sobering than having to pay for your own mistakes.

I can see quite easily how she made the mistake.

Just feel lucky that it was a teenage girl and not a teenage boy, or you would be looking at a write-off due to a frontal crash or a roll over.

not sure "girls" would be the only ones to make a mistake.

Not to brag....
My daughter was/is a professional ballerina at the age of 16. I'll tell you, that gal can drive a car as well and fast as a guy.
She's now 21, and quite surpasses the driving skills of her Psycholgist mother! I know cause I have to sit in the right hand seat now and then.

I would also add, that the lesson generally gets learned really well (no repeats). Nothing like not being able to spend money on movies/outings with friends/etc. because you have to pay for a collision deductible (plus the increased insurance rates that resulted from the encounter with an ATM pole) to emphasize a lesson.

... and to be sure, there is a reason why insurance rates for teenage girls are lower (MUCH lower in our area) than rates for teenage boys. And I wouldn't disagree with that disparity from my observation of driving records of the boys v. girls that my daughters went to school with.
And I can prove that girls are in more accidents around my old high school. It's still sexism no matter how you look at it. Besides, a simple scrape can cost $1000. I just had to fix a dent in the S80's door from a deer that ran into it. $1000 for that is near robbery.

Perhaps in a given neighborhood (or any individual isolated sample), you might see more or less accidents by a group of males or females, but sexism has nothing to do with it either way. Insurance companies are in business to make money, and if female drivers did not in fact exhibit lower accident rates, they would certainly not allow them to pay lower premium amounts than their male counterpart.
There are hundreds of studies confirming this, and quoting one from August 2004:
Differences between men and women in terms of their driving behavior and accident rates have long been demonstrated in the UK, mainland Europe, the United States, Australia and in many other countries. In all studies and analyses, without exception, men have been shown to have a higher rate of crashes than women. This gender difference is most marked in the population under the age of 25 years, but is also evident among older drivers. . . <various studies show> that men have double the number of crashes per 1,000 drivers than women. . . a higher number of crashes . . . incur their first crash earlier in their driving career.
http://www.sirc.org/publik/driving.pdf
One study might lend some moral support to Copeland's daughter:
"..men are more at risk from accidents involving high speed while women are more likely to be involved in accidents resulting from perceptual errors."
