My 06 R sux off the line it's not even funny. You would think having awd is great for you to get a good start while other cars spin off the line. I have a Bsr chip and the car is abeast on the highway /frol a roll it takes my buddies e46M3 but off the line it just doesn't go anywere?? It's almost like the turbo has so much lag. Any tips on how to take off faster with a auto?
I tried to brake boost but it makes a horrible sound + it doesn't make a diff.

Re: Why does the Automatic SUCK off the line?? (zigger)

its because of the torque limiting in first and second gears. I dont think you can do anything about it either. Cant remember which chip tuning it was, maybe iPD?, but I think I remember reading somewhere that you can order it without the torque limiting, but you can FRY you tranny if you're not careful. I know, it sucks. But I'd rather be a little slow off the line and still have a working transmission.

Debate it all you want, I promise you there is no limit with the 06 six speed GT.

How would you say that you have the insight? Did you engineer the tranny? Do you work for Volvo? Just curious why you're SO sure.

Re: (slowrey)

I have driven both. The 06 is a different car in 1st and 2nd gear than the 05. Plus, in 05 the specs for the R said the auto was 258lbs torque, the specs for 06 do not differentiate between the auto and manual.

Like I said other's beg to differ with you. From what I've heard, 06's do not have as much torque limiting however, some is still implied as the tranny hasn't changed.

Why it can handle the torque of the R in first and second gear.
zigger- you are probably experiencing the famous "Bog", affects both GTs and Manuals. The only way to avoid I've found is if your tires will break lose, keeping your engine RPMs up in the power band. The only time I've been able to break tires loose was when I was wearing 225/45x17 Wintersport M3s or if the road was a little damp. Car launches like a rocket in those instances, and I laid down my best times.
I would think that with instatrac and brake torqueing, an 06 GT would have the least bog issues, but maybe not.

Re: (slowrey)

Just to note, the new slush box (Tiptronic) 911 turbo is faster 0-60 than the manual. 3.4 sec vs 3.7. No...it is not an automatically shifted manual tranny either. Info in this weeks AutoWeek (Gt3 and turbo tested).

Re: (FineProperty)

Makes sense, turbo doesn't lose boost during shifting, and you can brake torque for launch, having turbo full up boost from the get go.

Typically Volvo limits torque by limiting boost. You could answer all your questions by having a 06 GT owner put on a boost gauge.

In any case, the 06 GT definitely does not "suck off the line" - to me it feels faster than the manual from a stop.

I never got that feeling.
My LS felt faster off the line for an automatic than the auto R.
However, from 5mph+, the R is DEFINITELY quicker.
They also have further limiters in first and second gears.
The '06 does not have peak torque limited, but MAY have limiters in first and / or second gears.
BTW, the additional 1-2 gear limiters weren't exactly made public by Volvo when the first R's came out either.
So when is someone going to hook up a car to a boost gauge and find out?
Zigger: It's really simple...AWD + Auto with non-aggressive torque converter = bog. Bog in a turbo car is very bad at launch. Boost is way down. Not much you can do.

Once the light turns green, I slightly edge ahead to about 3 grand and then nail it. Granted, this only lasts about 1/4 mile and never reaches a huge amount of speed. But, it is enough of a punch to let them know that the 2 dozen R's are on the car for a reason.

If not, that horrible sound may be your engine power being cut and your back brakes being applied.
You can't disable TRACS (should only engage if one side is slipping more than the other), but you NEED to have DSTC completely off for doing launches. Have to hit button 5 times in sequence until is says: DSTC Anti-Skid Off.
