If I hadn't invested so much into mods, I'd consider it...
For now I plan on hanging onto the R until it returns to the Earth.

Re: Who's going to trade their R for the new S80 V8? (BOOSTED S60R)

If they would introduce a V80 (or V90) I'd think about it, but I couldn't live with a sedan anymore after having the utility of the V. And it would be really cool if they would pair the V8 with a manual.

While it is gorgeous and has a bigger back seat, since 95% of the time there is no one in the back seat, don't really see the point.
Stock R is sexier, quicker and my R is WAY faster. Plus, I only have 2 more car payments and its completely paid off (paying off the 24 month loan early).

I came from that direction...
The S80 is a great car - I had a T6. It was very fast but lots of torque steer from the line. It was however, a highway blaster and the extra room was nice. I got the R for its AWD, 6 speed MT, handling and limited production - I don't want to see the car I drive everywhere.
My next Volvo will be the new C70 - but I wish they would make it AWD & boost the HP for 2008

Re: Who's going to trade their R for the new S80 V8? (djeuch)

Hadn't seen the 6.0, but I imagine that is Volvo figures.
Volvo still says R does it in 5.4 (MT) and my R is faster than that, so my point is still valid.
But I'm not bagging on S80, looks like a great car, and if someone needed more back seat room, but didn't want a wagon, think it is a great choice.

For right now....No manual = No way.
I'm really hoping that Volvo will offer a proper R version of the next gen S60 in a few years (assuming there is an S60 - and if not, of the S80). If not, I really like what I've read about the next gen B8 S4 (especially the rear bias Quattro). Ironically, my biggest hurdle might be getting my wife over the styling since she vehemently dislikes the soap-bar shape of the current model.
-Eric

Well, we need the larget back seat
So while I love the front cabin of the R, I always planned at the 3-yr point for me in '07 to look at the next S80, which seesm real nice and close to the R. I will also cross shop the new Lexus and a 7-series (sorry Volvo)

And, it should, since the base price of a 750i is around $72K, whereas prices for the S80 start around $38K! That's a $30K+ variance! The Li only gets more expensive, and if you add in a V12, you're in the $100K range.
-Eric

Re: Who's going to trade their R for the new S80 V8? (Sue Esponte)

Eric-
I think the point is size, and Volvo's illusions of grandeur.
A S80 V8 AWD would compare very nicely with a 730i or even 740i in Europe.

Re: Who's going to trade their R for the new S80 V8? ("R" Kelly)

Thanks Kelly, that is what I meant - as to the Lexus its the new, not yet for sale 460 (is the number I believe) flagship replacement. Cabin size, overall fun preformance for a long distance touring sedan and technology like Nav and bluetooth will be the issues, not as much price and on-track preformance. I will sometimes do 3 hrs each way to a client meeting instead of the hassel of flying a short hop in California...

What illusions of grandeur? The S80 is priced as a sub-$40K car, and our friend FireR lives in California where a 750i is the base 7 series available, and it is priced over $70K! How the hell can you really compare these 2 cars with one another? Like I said, the Volvo will and should lose the comparo.
When I was looking at the R, I also considered an RX8 and a Mini Cooper S JCW. There's no comparing the 3 cars. They're all directed at entirely different demographics with entirely different wants and wallets. The fact that I could afford a car twice the cost of the Mini had nothing to do with my search. So, I had to decide what kind of car I wanted. I don't care if the S80 and 750i are comparably sized, someone looking at both needs to decide what they want from their car. You could throw a Mercury Grand Marquis into the mix, too, if you're going to argue that comparable size and power require comparisons. Sorry, I just don't follow the logic. This has nothing to do with Volvo or delusions of grandeur. It has to do with someone's personal indecision because there is no way Volvo intended for the S80 to compete directly with the 7 series in the States. The options and ammenities speak volumes to that fact.
-Eric
