Does anyone know what would cause a "whirring" noise that seems to come from the passenger side dashboard? It is intermittant and fairly quiet; it sounds kinda like a hydraulic windshield wiper motor.
I seem to recall one of the car review magazine articles mentioning it too.

Yes, I've got it too - although only when the car has warmed up a bit.
Whilst quiet, it is a bit off-putting (although resolved by the Dynaudio!)

Re: (tony996)

those are the damper motors opening an closing the vents for the ecc. if you make adjustments to the ecc you will hear them - it's normal but some people describe it as a "yapping dog". the same thing happens in the S40. Volvo came out with software for the S40 which resolved this, but i am surprised it is on this car.

I have a C70 T5 and it has the noise too. Changing the ECC does not help. I think it a real dog!

It is a noise that is inherent only to the new S40s, V50s and new C70s. It comes from the electrohydraulic steering pump. Most people do not notice but once you notice it (and it bothers you), boy, it is worse than a nagging mother-in-law.
Yannis

Assuming it is the pump, is there a fix? The noise is driving me crazy? Since some cars have it and some don't (apparently), would putting in a new pump work? Any ideas welcome.

It will not make the noise go away, 100%. Nonetheless, it does offer some improvement.
Last, I bet that most service advisors/service managers are not going to even be aware of that item.
Yannis

I had a noise like this that sounded like a vacuum valve opening & closing. Also had no heat on the drivers side. The dealer upgraded the cars software. This fixed both problems!

I am a current owner of a 03 S80 T6. I was looking at an 06 C70 (red) today and loved it. I just wanted to ask you about your experience with the S80's and what made you buy the convertible. Also, are you happy with the choice?

Re: (jos80T6)

I had 2 S80s which were both trouble free and I was very happy. I always wanted a convertible. My wife insisted on a four seat vehicle I limited my choices to the Audi, Volvo, BMW, & Saab. After a terrible winter with my rear wheel drive Mercedes, I eliminated the BMW. The Saab and Audi were dated designs and I loved the styling of the C70.
Have had some minor issues most of which have been satisfactorily resolved by the dealer. My only real complaint is the lack of satellite radio and I wish a larger engine like the T6 or V8 were available however the car has plenty of power for the type of driving I do. Also paid top dollar and the dealer didn't cut me any slack despite having purchased 2 previous vehicles and sending several friends all of whom purchased vehicles. It's a great car and a lot of fun to drive!
