My wife says this happens occasionally. I heard it the other day and thought it was transmission whine, but it was actually the blower motor. It made the whining on the lowest setting and even a few higher. Stops as soon as you turn off the blower. The A/C compressor was off.

I only found this thread, but it appears unrelated as this one talks about the compressor.

My s60 has been doing it for years. It gets worse in cold weather. Basically ignoring it, I'm at 188k right now. So if it breaks I will fix it, literally been years (I'm not picky so it doesn't bother me, but I can see how it would drive some folks nuts).
