That's weird. Could you take pictures of both sides of the cylinder head?

no dial caliper?

Here's a pic of the other side with digital micrometer. Readouts not totally accurate since I was doing it one handed to take the pic. It's in the ballpark tho. Either way, it's clearly around 129 +/- a bit as opposed to the ~149 the book calls for. Looks the same as every other T12 head I've looked at online.

Since I JUST so happen to have a dead T12 sitting in my driveway, I'm going to pop the cover off and measure that one later today to compare.

Got the turbo oil return pipe gasket and seal replaced. What a PAIN without a life. Took me forever to monkey around with that one. Lol.

Well, I feel much better. I measured the head of my S60's T12, and what would ya know? It also measures ~129mm!!! Me thinks the manufacturer's specs are incorrect! Just like their oil capacity for that year. Get yo act together, Volvo!

Also, since milled tolerances are pretty high for the T12, I measured the thickness of my oem Volvo head gasket vs the old thinner probably aftermarket one, and that buys me about another 0.01-0.02" back. Since my new machinist PROPERLY straightened the head he only had to mill a bit off the center off the bottom and we lost virtually nothing at the sides. Im going to chance moving forward without my 0.02" shim after all. I'm going in baby! Wish me luck!

Yo, Facusan. What do the torque stage 3 instructions mean? Says "130 & #176." First to say, 20 Nm and 60 Nm respectively.

Does that mean we go to 60 Nm on stage 2, then just go another 130 degrees on each? Not sure what the #176 means.

Yes sir! 130 degrees after finishing stage 2 at 60Nm. Always following the tightening pattern on the bolts (from center and outwards).

Not sure what the #176 means.
typo error for the degree symbol maybe?

Right O! Man. Volvo sure does have a lot of typos in their tech info. Head heights, oil, torque specs...

Heads on btw! That anaerobic sealer you paint on is interesting. Now I know what the previous installer DIDN'T do. They used a standard grey gasket maker. Guess it worked and all but their application was sloppy and all over the insides when I took it apart. I think my installs gonna be way mo better. If it even runs that is. Haha.

Looking great!. Yeah, using the anaerobic sealant is key on these engines. Because it allows you to take your time installing the cam cover, and any excess will not dry and lets you wipe it off. And if there is any excess in the oil passages, it gets wiped during the first start and gets trapped in the oil filter. I once made the mistake of using grey RTV instead, I was extremely careful to not apply too much, and took me a lot of time (it was the first time I did it) and I didn't have the clamps that thread on the spark plug holes. I managed to install it. It worked great the first month, then started seeping oil everywhere. Learned my lesson right there.......

BTW, don't forget to put the aluminum pipe from the turbo to the intake manifold before installing the VVT hubs. You won't be able to install it with the hubs in place.

THANK YOU! You probably just saved me some serious time with this one. Getting anxious to finish the job now that I'm on the other side of this. Thank GOD for all of you guys here and partnering up with a GOOD machine shop through it all.

BTW, didn't end up shimming it after all. I had some sweet tiny shims made by a local fabricator, but when I tried putting them in, they were 1.5mm too tall. He messed up since I asked for 5mm and they were 6.5. Oh well. I just couldn't handle one more delay so I said screw it and moved on. Looks like the T12 block is WAY more beefed up than the T5 anyway though, so I think I'll be ok since I'm not going to be doing anything beyond a Stage 1 tune if that, and don't race or anything. Like you saw in a previous pic, that slit is pretty shallow compared to the older ones. Only 5mm deep. I know that's still going to be the weak point, but a future project for a future car perhaps. Just need to focus on getting this drivable at all for now.

Not to re-ignite the oil discussion, as it has occurred PLENTY of times on this site, but I'm running 0W-40 in the C30 at the moment. Here in WI, low temperature viscosity during cold starts are what I'm concerned with. Technically, 5W-40 would be fine as well, and I may switch to that as it's easier to get these days, last time I went for a change it was difficult to get 0W in my town.

Typically I use Mobil 1 or Liqui-Moly (FCP).

Quick bump. I'm ordering parts for my S60 head project and on my shopping list is the "Volvo" foam roller to apply the anaerobic sealant. The last one I used worked marvelously, so I'd like to order another one. However it seems silly to order the whole roller set when all I need is the foam part. I still have the roller handle itself. If memory serves me correctly, the packaging said it was a German made one, but I don't recall what brand. Does anybody have any intel on replacements for these or should I order the whole setup again? It's only $13 or so, but just seems kinda wasteful. Can't seem to find any info on this anywhere online.

I used a cheap foam roller meant for paint touchups from Home depot/Lowe's.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking, but wanted to make sure since the "Volvo" one worked so well. Applied that sealant perfectly. It's almost go time! Just rounding up parts now and waiting for my shop to finish with the valve job. Can't wait to get this puppy back on the road. C30's still running like a champ, btw. :)
