I purchased my last set of tires at Sears and made a nasty error. Never leave your Locking Lug Nuts on the vehicle when you have service done. I finally got around to pulling my 18" Pegs out of the closet and found the lugs were a little over-torqued. I have never seen a lug wrench bend like that. After having a hell of a time getting two wheels changed I went to the third and found my Lug Key was stripping. I was able to get the third wheel off, but that was it. The key was ruined.
I contacted the manufacturer (McGard) and they had me take pictures of the Lug Pattern and they are sending me another key. $14.95 isn't too bad, and I hope it works. I should have known this could happen. I don't know if I will be putting any locking lugs back on. I also don't think I will have any service done at Sears again. Why do I always learn the hard way?

I always make sure they use torque sticks on their impact wrenches.. people who do not should be shot..

Re: Wheel locks (badams1897)

DO NOT USE MCGARD LOCKS - they suck (same ones as sold by Volvo). If you want to use locks, just get a set from IPD.
The McGard set has the head welded to the body, and they will snap off. Had a moron rotate my tires (and I told him hand torque only) and snap one of the heads off. Had to destroy the wheel and rotor to get it off - $1300 later - lucky they paid for their mistake.
This has been brought up here MANY times...

Re: Wheel locks (Minn R)

I got the new key in the mail today. I had three lugs still on the car. I was able to get two off before I stripped the new key. Now I need to order another. One lug left, but it's the one that is going to be a head ache. I won't be putting these back on the vehicle.
Edit: If you notice a discrepancy in the number of tires I changed, I had put two of the locking lugs back on before I noticed I had a problem.

Bear hard into the lock with the impact wrench/key. The key will likely spin, but it will loosen and remove the lock. No risk because you already have a new key on order. I've done it, it works.

Re: Wheel locks (redalrt)

I took the car to Merchant Tire today and had them try and spin the lug loose. It didn't work. I now need to order another key as these two are destroyed. If The new key breaks then what should I try?

My guess is that you can hammer on the socket but the ring will just spin to prevent it from turning loose. As for who steels them, I don't know. I bought the locking lugs back in 2003 and have used them because they are there. I will not be putting them back on. I think the weld might be the only option.

It's the people from PA that steal them. Eagles fans mostly!

Re: (Chilled Man)

Ordered a third lug key today. McGard said they would credit me for the one I just ruined. But I need to mail it too them. Still nice that they would do that.

Re: (dave_n_ruth)

I was able to get the locking lug off today. Had a guy at work put his foot up against the 18" Breaker Bar with the new key. After putting all four other lugs to 140 ft. lbs. torque I was able to finally break the lock free. It was on there good. I swear I almost picked up the front end of the car while trying to break it free (exaggeration). I am very happy!
