Too bad the XC90 doesn't ship with a tow hitch :(

I have two electric bikes with fat tires so I'm looking for a way to take them in the XC90 with a tow hitch carrier designed for heavier electric bikes.

What's a cost-effective way to get his done? is the retractable tow hitch an option? How much does that go for these days with parts and labor?

The Volvo tow hitch with wiring kit is $1500 to $1700 installed. You do not need to install the Volvo wiring kit.
I would recommend a draw tite type hitch from U-Haul. The Volvo car body side wiring end will not bolt up or mount onto a non-Volvo hitch if you do decide to add Volvo wiring later.

Wow that sounds not so bad. Why did my local dealer say $3,000?!

About a week after I took delivery of our 23 XC90 b6, I went back and sprung for the dealer installed retractable hitch. Total cost parts, labor & tax $2,100. I hated paying so much, but we have a small Airstream and I love how well the integrated features works and for me are worth the cost. Electric deployment of hitch when you want it. And it folds completely away out of view rest of the time..... just in case you envision a camper in your future. Tow capacity is 5,000lb w/ 500lb tongue weight. Good luck with your decision.

I put in the factory foldable hitch myself about a year ago. The process isn’t too bad and took me about 2 - 3 hours as I familiarized myself with the vehicle and proceeded slowly to avoid causing any unnecessary damage. The cost for parts and dealer programming would’ve been about $1000.
However, I had a defective control module from the selling dealer and had to purchase another module from the local, so the cost was pushed up a bit. It came out about the same as if it were installed from the factory.

I believe if you only need it to carry bike rack, you can get stealth hitch, for which you can likely skip the wiring and be able to have a cleaner install. Some tutorial on YouTube for DIY as well. Without electrical, everything should be relatively straight forward. Good luck!

You should ask them how much they’re charging for the HW and how much for labor; $3k is highway robbery.

Volvo’s MSRP on the HW is $1400 - there are two kits available that include towbar, module, and harness. You could order it directly through Volvo. It’s likely your local dealer has a large parts markup (many dealers of any brand typically do and at least for other brands it’s easy for them to get away with it because other brands don’t offer a customer facing MSRP to give you an idea of what the part price “should be”).

You could even order the kit and select your dealer for local pickup and it comes out of their inventory. Or some dealers offer discounts. Riley Volvo - a forum sponsor often has sales or standard discounts off of Volvo MSRP. Volvo’s currently offering free shipping so you could order online and have it processed by Riley and have it shipped to your home.

Take it to any dealer to have it installed. If you have options you will likely find a more reasonable quote to have it installed.

Here I picked a 2022 with Air Suspension (don’t know what year and options you have).

What's a good price to aid for to have the dealer do this with parts and labor? Is around $1750 possible?

What's a reasonable labor amount if I get the part separately?
I had foldable hitch installed last month. Ordered parts from the dealer’s website and had it installed. $995 + taxes for the foldable tow parts Kit020 (10% off on Volvo parts website at the time of order). $600 to $700 for labor at the dealership

There is also an additional 30% mail in rebate for accessories through Volvo Customer Service for up to $200 if parts are ordered through the dealer (unsure whether web order will qualify since I haven’t received my rebate check yet)

What do you mean by "Stealth receiver?" What product is that?
I am planning to get one of these - there are YouTube videos on how to install, and the more pricey kit has the Volvo wiring harness you need to take to a dealer after installation to get it programmed.

Please let us know how this works out. Will a dealer install a non-Volvo accesory like this?

Is this it?

So how much do you save over the Volvo one? Seems like with installation charges, both will cost around $1,750...

I like how the Volvo one is integrated with the press button feature.
That video for this one too:

the biggest difference is that I’ve heard (and have seen) the factory hitch that they have to cut this unsymmetrical hole on your bumper so the thing can pop in and out and it isn’t pretty. The Stealth hitch you Pop it only when you need it. It’s up to you aesthetically and financially.

It is nice to have the button and hideaway but the dealer will butcher your bumper anyway. Check this

Wow I had no idea the Volvo hitch mangles the bumper so badly.

What on earth were they thinking? After charging so much, did it not occur to them there should be a clean way to install this hitch? IMHO this should have been a factory installed option for Inscription or other trim level. So useful to be able to carry bikes and not to have to butch the bumper to be able to carry bikes in an SUV.
