The vehicle in question is a 1985 240DL auto trans with o/d.

So while driving down the freeway I noticed my rear window was foggy, what do I do? I turn on the rear window defroster. The moment I turn on the defroster my "kick down"arrow comes on and the transmission downshifts into 3rd gear. I couldn't fix this with the button on the shifter, and having prior electrical anomalies I "rolled" a few of the fuses around in their place and managed to get the overdrive to come back on. Why on earth might this possibly happen? IF it is simply a fuse issue are there any better ones out there instead of the original types??? They're kind of crappy

Issues like this usually mean a bad ground or a shorting wire somewhere. If you have a Bentley manual, and if you don't have one get one, first go to the pages on the interior wiring and you will find diagrams that show all of the ground points, and then check all the ground wires and clean all of the ground connectors.
