I drive a stock '96 854R and absolutely love the car. My mother needs a replacement for her 760ti and I found a black R wagon in my paper for a seemigly reasonable price. I went and test drove the car for her and everything seemed great. One strange thing is that the turbo whined under boost. My turbo hisses under boost. Any thoughts on why two R's with similar milage and same year would have such a strikingly different sound? What sound does your turbo make?

My turbo on my 96 turbo hisses as well, I do not have an R, but I have the t5. Mine whines when it just wakes up, in the early morning, I have to let it warm up. Of course, if you get on it early, the whining stops.

My R whines, not hisses - except under very hard throttle, when it produces a deep roar, which I assume is mostly engine.
Normally you get the spooling up whistle noise every time you increase the revs.

My turbo hisses at low and mid-throttle. It's called the wastegate valve doing its job. (you know...dumping excess boost for the given situation.) I have noticed it to be louder on some days than others. I also noticed at WOT the hissing goes away and the car goes FAST!
