I struck two large pot holes this week. Each time I heard a funky whirring sound like I broke something. Each time I looked and no flat..car seemed normal enough after I pulled away slowly. It sounds like a engine rev without hitting the gas.
Other than rim and tire damage...what else might I check on when I take it to a dealer next time im in? Car seems to track straight but it took a couple real whallops! UGNHH!

Re: What potential damage is there from pot holes (shrooman)

Sounds like you may have taken a wheel out of round, could be bent. The fix may be as simple as getting the wheels re-mounted and balanced. This is most likely what they will do first to try and figure out what is wrong.
Another problem that could potentially exist is wheels being out of alignment, but this doesn't sound like your problem. If they do end up taking off the wheels to mount and balance, then you should probably get them all re-aligned at that point as well.

Yeah only when I hit the pot holes do I hear the sound. SO the abs may be the culprit. That is the worst sound when you hit those at 35mph!!!
I'll take her in for a check up.

It is the ABS. I live in Minnesota (land of 10,000 pot holes) and hear it on a daily basis.

A Volvo tech told me that sometimes a big pothole can actually deform the strut tower a bit. This changes the suspension geometry just enough that the car does not go straight when aligned to spec.

I dont think the 18" Pegs have that low profile tires but potholes can be disastrous with nice rims as well. My Dad has an 03 S-Type R (Jaguar) and he's bent about 4 rims because of the crappy roads here in SoCal.

When I bought my '04 earlier this year, it came with two sets of wheels: 17" pegs with winters, and 18" pegs with summers. It has the winters on now, and I was told the 18" wheels MAY be "out of round" (I read that as the ARE) from a pothole incident in his native Ohio.
My question is, they look fine on visual inspection so any damage can't be that bad (can it?). What can be done if they can't be fixed through balancing?
Thanks,
