The credit union I work for is having a car sale soon and I have been thinking about trading in my 964. My question is, what series is the best to work with as far as mods are concerned. I want to stay around 10-15k if possible (maybe 20k if it woud be worth it), so I'm thinking it would have to be a 98 or older. Also, what series would be best stock? Lastly, which is more reliable (the 960 I have VS. the 850R I want)?
Thanks for the info,
Matt
[email protected]

The best all-round 850 is the 2.5 GLT - it's pretty fast, can be tarted up to T5 or R spec without shaming the bodykit and it's fairly economical.
The T5 is IMO rather overrated for its extra performance, though it has a lot more interior toys including full leather trim (which is actually less practical than the half-leather of the GLT).
OK, cut to the chase - I went from a GLT to a R having test-driven the T5 and not been impressed enough to buy.
The R may be fun, but it's very expensive on fuel and insurance and gets you buying lots of bits to tinker; a car for the hardcore enthusiast only.
Don't get a diesel, don't get a 10-valve and don't repeat don't get a 2.0 litre.
Sadly you can only get autos in the States, but the "hooligan" button Sports mode is pretty good.

To clarify, the R and T-5R have alcantara suede interior, where the T-5 and turbo models have full leather.
The R is lowered, has a stiffer suspension and some ground effects. The T-5 and turbo 850 are the same motor with a less aggressive ECU. If you plan to chip them though, for instance the IPD chip, they will probably have the same resulting hp as the only difference was the computer.
The R has 240hp roughly, where the turbo has about 20 less hp. In the US, your choices are no turbo, low pressure turbo GLT, turob/T-5 or the top of the line R.

I just want to clarify something. If you buy the 850 GLT there is now way of getting it up to 850R or 850 T-5 specs. It is a different engine with different compression and a low pressure turbo. Even if you chip the car it still won't hold a candle to the full blown high pressure turbo.

I'd like to own either a black 97 850R or an old E30 M3.
The R will be just an daily driver car for me. I don't even think I would want any other upgrade than ECU and a resonablily OK exhaust system. YES, and I want an auto tranny....sick of driving this manual C70 with the race clutch. I like the old 850 look more than the 70 series.
The wide body M3 will be something I can take it to the track for the weekend yet still a comfortable daily driven commuting car. Hehehe...this one will be almost a race car. Roll cage, no rear seats, racing seats for the front, sport steering wheel, full suspension, no radio but YES AC, E36 M3 engine (if I can get the 321hp Euro version
I'll keep it NA), AA Stage II turbo kit if that fits, custom turbo.....upgrade ECU, and all other goodies for the engine. Oh..did I mention some 350 mm 6 pistons brake kit, too?
Hehehe...I can only dream.
ABout performance - what is better stock a '97 850 ( NOT really too particular on which model, but wagon...) or a 70 series wagon, also, not too particular on which model, I would like the R's, but Im prbably going to go for the light pressure turbo instead, so any comments?

As I was looking through the paper yesterday as I always do, I found a 96 850R for sale...$15k obo...it has 80k miles but it's owned by an older couple so I'm sure it hasn't been mistreated or anything...He's got the receipts for everything since he bought the car in 98...He also says everything's been done at the dealer...I can't wait to check it out this afternoon...The only 'downside' is that it's red...I would have rathered the black...oh well...
I'll let you guys know how it turns out...
Thanks for all the help and info...
