What milage do you service the R?

I was just wondering when I should take my new R in to get serviced.

When they service the R do they change the oil to? If they dont then what oil is reccommended for the R?

Thanks

Changed my oil at 3,000 miles with synthetic. It was not done at the dealer. The first scheduled service is at 7,500 miles and oil change is included. Dealer uses non synthetic 10w30 only unless you give them something else.

Re: (Stoobey)

The R isn't an airplane.

If stock simply stick with Volvo's recommendation (Not dealer recommendation!)

Non synthetic 10W-30 isn't recommended for the R!
Point your dealer to it.

Oil changed every 4K miles by Volvo dealer. At $19.95 including a car wash, no reason to do it myself.

Same here. On a 4K oil schedule.
I would change to synthetic after 1500 miles, then 4K and so forth

Re: (Johann)

The recommended interval of 7500 miles is too long for my taste. I'll let the dealer do the "free" 7500 mile oil changes that came with my '05, but I'm doing an intermediate change myself. And I give the dealer 6 qts. of Mobil 1 when they do the changes.

After the "free" oil changes go away, I'll probably change every 5K miles (easy to remember that interval, & neither too long nor too short, particularly with synthetic oil).

Owner's manual recommends 10W-30 for most climates; 5W-30 or 5W-40 for temps less than -20C or -4F.

Stoobey, I don't think Redline has all the certifications that Volvo requires, in order to maintain the warranty. That's worth considering with a new car (I wouldn't want a warranty claim for a blown motor denied just because I used an unapproved oil, even if it is a high-quality lubricant).

Castrol does not sell those in North America......... at least under those names

True, sorry about that.

In Europe Volvo recommends these oil grades with a 12.5K miles interval.

The owners manual specifically states the usage of Synthetic (Castrol) oil only.

Texas V70R says "Oil changed every 4K miles by Volvo dealer. At $19.95 including a car wash, no reason to do it myself. "

Thats incredible to get an oil change and a wash for $20.00. I pay $30.00 for oil change (castrol synthetic 10-30). If I go across the street to the touchless car wash, its another $19.00 for the wash. My dealer is quite a bit more than this. oclv

I get a free wash with any / every visit. This includes floor mats, etc.

Customer service plus mod friendly. The R is the fourth Volvo I've gotten from them. :thumbup

Re: What milage do you service the R? (Stoobey)

The short answer: Use a full Group IV or V base synthetic (buy and bring your own) at absolutely no longer than 5K intervals and you'll have no problems. Never use dealer bulk oil. I halve the factory maintenance interval for maximum convenience.

This particular engine is harder on oil than folks think. Over on a certain motor oil site, a premium PAO synthetic effectively depleted just over 4K in this engine running stock. That should give a clue about running conventionals over the full warranty interval in an R.

Redline 10W-30 is terrific in the R, API starburst and cost issues aside. FWIW, Volvo only requires a GF-2 oil through MY 2005. A3 performance is a plus.

Avoid full warranty change intervals (7.5K) and/or dealer bulk changes like the black plague (or sludge in this instance). They're way too long and dealer bulk is often an inexpensive CAFE-rated conventional formula that I would never put in this engine (or any P2 turbo for that matter). Volvo doesn't fix their dealer oil specifications as rigorously as VW now does after the 1.8T disaster. Perhaps they should for the white block turbos. VW learned the hard way what unknown dealer bulk oils can do to a higher stress turbo engine.
