Re: what is this part behind my bumper ? nwb question! (frenchs60r)

It is an FMIC. Volvo R's have two intercoolers, the main one and the smaller one you see. Made for more marketing hype than actual performance and many install a single, larger intercooler.

BOTH get removed, one large FMIC is installed in place of them

oh ok !!
is it better to upgrade to a only one aftermarket Fmic and to remove the stock fmic and disconnect the main intercooller ?

I think there will be a unanimous response to the affirmative. Of course, that all depends on how big of an aftermarked FMIC you get. 800 CFM seems to be the choice size.

Yes. IMO the single most important mod you can do for consistent, reliable performance improvement.

Yes, if changing the intercooler is necessary; because your climate is rather cool, I'm not sure you will experience the consistent improvement in performance that you would in a hotter climate.

It may also depend upon how large of an increase in intercooling he really needs given the temps he is likely to see. Caen, Normandy sees average high temps in June, July, August, and September of 67, 70, 72 & 67 degrees Fahrenheit (19, 21, 22 & 19 Celsius). Source: http://www.wunderground.com/NO...glish

If you were the OP in Caen and you didn't take your car to the race track, would you still place an upgraded intercooler up front in your list of mods; for example, ahead of the TME catback that he's already planning on installing?
