Just wanted to know what you expect at 16000 miles on the clock on a 2.4 s40?
I've been ranting and raving about the s40 on how much i love it but how it is so easily disliked too.
I was this close >.< to changing again for an s60 mainly because I want a volvo, i want auto, i want diesel. this mix being lethal on the s40 but fine on the s60. but obviously the s40 is so much more better looking!
having said this... the main reason for this thread is about the quality. I had an vauxhall astra last year before I wrote it off on similar mileage to this one. not being one of the "higher" of the cars, I would expect the issues I have now on that but that car ran flawless until the point of it saving my life.
solid, no issues ever and only complained about the brake pads so i changed them.
back to the s40, my previous 1.8 s40 2005 manual was "ok". it had been back and forth from volvo from water leaks, to brake issues, to clutch issues and i just got fed up. still i loved it and so i traded it in for a s40 2.4 auto.
2 months down the line, I have issues with this too.
gears change abrubtly and somewhat slowly too... but my biggest concern and gripe is the rattles.
I have a lot of rattles from the roof console where the buttons are.. you can see it shaking and moving and holding it in gets rid off it.
going over ramps sometimes makes a groaning sound under the wheels...suspension??
Now i noticed when i am in traffic at standstill, under the car somewhere is making a very weird noise... its almost like grinding but solid sound not squeeking... bearings?
complained about brakes squeeking, nothign was done, complained about my drivers seat moving ever so slightly... whips?? nothing was done.
I know the garage well and the people so I know they are not fobbing me off but am i right in being concerned about the above?
am i right in expecting a totally smooth ride and so on or should I expect the above?
I'm just not sure after having two s40s and coming from a car worth only a quarter of this one, i'm some what gutted about the issues.
I got the previous one at 2000miles and traded it in at 14000, i got the 2.4 at 14000 and its about to hit 16000 so i'm worried once warranty is out what i am to expect.
anyway rant over just wanted to hear your thoughts. obviously a few of the above are on teh forum already from others.... but the main question here is what to expect from this car now and in future.
thanks

Mate sounds like this one needs fixing up by the dealer.
Mine is now on 41000 miles and 17 months. No major issues at all. The only rattles I have are my fault, handsfree kit and h&k ipod screen thats it.
In fact it feels better and faster now than at 16K
2 of my colleagues also have similar aged 2.0D S & SE models with just under 40K and whilst they are less well looked after than mine theirs are as reliable and rattle free........
Try another dealer to check if you are getting fobbed off.

Akask, sounds to me your Volvo for Life experience has been less then stellar. As much as I like Volvo cars I would suggest you try another brand.

After the astra crashed and saved my life...! the main reason for moving onto such brand was for the safety record but at the moment, it feels like it will not make it !
I'm going to have a "gentle" word with them and portray the main points again... if its still not fixed, i'll terminate my payments as i'm paying monthly for it (finance scheme)
maybe they might replace the car

Only issues I have had were the drivers side wiper striking the A pillar occasionally at speed and a sound similar to a golf ball rolling around under the seat whenever I changed direction.
Both sorted by dealer - the 'golf ball' was the drivers seat mount/rail needing greasing.
No other squeak, rattles, or probs since - touch wood.

Just an update,
I' went down to the garage (sales) and spoke to the lady who sold me the first s40... she knew my dissapointment with that car and so i let her in on the issues with this one.
she took me to the after sales/servicing and spoke to the person there.
volvo take the car back on the 3rd june for 5 days to sort it out.
i guess after that if issues are still there, then certain things might be said that they will regret :>
Took it in for the following:-
1. rattles - reproduced with the guy inside
2. pen marks on gaitor - he saw it too
3. brakes sqeeking - road test on the 3rd
4. humming/groaning sound - road test on 3rd
5. Door sticking - not reproduced yet
6. noise over ramps-road test on 3rd
7. seat moving-road test on 3rd
8. spoke about the condition of seats - nothing can be done apparently
9. spoke about unusual rust on brake calipers, apparently due to brake dust/metal filings, nothing can be done apparently.
10. radio software as it messes up time to time
I think that was it lol
I'll keep you guys updated... for now, back to the shopping site to see if theres any decent priced s60s
