I had hit exactly 100k miles since I bought the car in 2016.
Took the photo on the way to work to memorise this event 🥳
I was also on the way to my mechanic to replace broken spring (replaced already in 2017) as treat for my car for this occasion.

Exactly 19 miles later, having 100,019 miles since I bought it, my car also decided to celebrate this wonderful occasion and threw up huge cloud of steam that I originally thought was alternator fire, and had to stop 0.8 mile before my mechanic's garage to discover that all coolant is gone and spilling out trough underbelly.
Few hours later it been confirmed it was thermostat housing just giving up, so maybe it will live on monday, or maybe not...

Im becoming speechless how much this car hates me giving all the love I give it 😞🙄

ah well, happy 100k mile anniversary to me!... (slow and quiet "tooot" 🥳)...

I just replaced my 2006 S40 T5 M66 rear springs today if you need any advice. There are videos out there but having done it recently I have all the tricks fresh in my mind.

I think I've figured out what's going on with my belt squeak. I noticed rubber dust on my motor mount and figured I needed to take a peek.

First pic is my old tensioner and belt. The tensioner wheel is (should be) slightly lipped and give a couple mm clearance on each side of the belt. My wheel was worn on the passenger side edge and it looks like the 2k mile replacements are showing the same wear. So the belt is riding on the lip, not in the groove, and I think in turn this is causing the engine side of the belt to rub on the alternator pully.

It also looks like my new set is riding on the edge.

I know this is a Napa branded alternator but I don't know if it's really a Bosch or Denso or where/how that applies. But I'm guessing this pulley can be adjusted towards the alternator? I've seen a couple pics by I think @Facusan and @88domer where we all have the same type of altnerator and it looks like the pulley is at a different spot on the shaft.

Thank you in advance for any help.

PS. My old alternator saved my car from overheating. I opened the hood to jump the car and saw the empty coolant tank from the cracked Madusa.
Were you able to fix the belt squeak? I recently had the AC belt (aka accessory drive belt) after it snapped. I knew it was about to break so I had a Continental belt on hand (part 30777530). I had the mechanic install it and since then it squeaks and drives me nuts. It's a mild squeak but I hear it..

Thanks!

I've been busy!! Today I replaced my rear shocks and springs, but this is the last to-do on my very loooong list of things that were necessary after I bought my used P1 S40 T5 AWD M66. It's high miles but I want to make it last and I'm hoping with the work I put in that it will last me a while. It just hit 177,000 miles on my trip to pick up a part yesterday.

I couldn't have done all this without the good people here on the forum. This car was a diamond in the rough. Clean interior but lots of postponed maintenance. It's running great now!

In the last month, I have..
  • Overhauled the cooling system - replaced all radiator hoses, coolant tank, temperature sensor, and thermostat assembly
  • Replaced timing belt
  • Replaced water pump
  • Replaced AC belt aka accessory drive belt
  • Replaced all engine mounts
  • Replaced engine seals and camshaft seals
  • Replaced cabin air filter
  • Entire front suspension - front struts, upper mounts, control arms, bearings, sway bar links
  • Refurbish headlight assembly lenses to get rid of the "haze"
  • Replace headlights, brights, foglights, and all taillights
  • Upgrade stick shift lever and hand brake with real leather boot covers
  • All new tires
  • Replaced cracked windshield
  • Overhauled stereo with the help of Import Sauce.. Added aux, bluetooth, and Qi wireless charging phone holder
  • Replaced waterfall with the brushed aluminum look
  • Replaced stick shift knob with brushed aluminum knob
  • Upgraded all interior lights and puddle lights to LED
  • Added a tow hitch
  • Replaced trunk wiring harness
  • .. and finally today I did the rear suspension - shocks, upper mounts, bellows, bump rubber, and springs (springs are way too expensive!)

Still haven't gotten to it. Especially since I have to commit by taking a wheel and fender off to do something about it. Are you sure the tensionerss good? Or the other bearings? Usually a new belt will mask some other problems for a little bit.

No joke, I took the car out today and the noise is gone.. maybe the weather, maybe it needed to take time to break in, maybe having it jacked up over the weekend shifted something.. who knows.

You've been busy, Swede40.
Do you drive around with those roof racks always? The Thule ones I have for my rail-less V50 drives me crazy with all the wind noise so they only get mounted when I need them.
I thought the same thing when I got it, but it didn't have a key. I got a key from Thule now and matched it with my ski rack. Now I've been driving around and it doesn't make much noise or bother me so I'm just leaving it on. I suppose if I was doing a road trip I'd probably take it off, but since I use it a lot with a rocket box or ski rack I will probably just leave it on. It's my Colorado skimobile.

Changed rear brake pads. No matter how much I clean, grease and adjust the passenger side rear caliper, it wears out the pads in half the mileage compared to driver side. They were worn down to rivets in less than a year and the piston was almost popped out, overstretching the rubber boot and exposed to elements. A quick clean & polish removed the slight surface rust but I had to use a heavy duty piston compressor to push & wind it back in.

Oh well. Still waiting for the polyurethane bushes. New front ball joints went in earlier this week and I'd love to get the slightly tired suspension freshened up. Almost 220k miles on the clock now and some of them are still original... 😳

Last Thursday my car didn't crank. No illumination of the Speed/RPM but a bunch of side warning lights and an electrical hum from the rear which must have been the fuel pump on full blast. My voltmeter said 9.28 so I pulled my battery and figured this must be my comeuppance for not solving my alternator belt alignment issue.

I'm certain I got done by the tensioner clearance issue. The outside of my alternator belt was practically warn smooth with the paint pretty much worn off while crank belt is in brand new condition after just under 2500 miles. There was rubber dust everywhere and unfortunately I rubbed it off the tensioner before realizing I should have taken a picture. But I saw the rub point on the tensioner arm.

I held the tensioner clockwise while bolting it back on and was as gentle as possible cranking it to put on the belt. The belt looked like it was tracking centered on the pulley from underneath.

So I just hope this fixed the issue I guess.

Today I flushed and and refilled my brake fluid with the DOT4 kit from FCP Euro. Having the PowerBleeder was a big help. It was my first time doing this (ever)! It was easy. My car is from the USA Northeast and it's an '05 so there was...RUST.

A word to the wise, don't rush if you have rust! I used PB Blaster/breakfree on all the valves. They all came loose except for one valve, and it snapped! I should have been more patient with the FR corner.

Thank god it broke without any sort of leak. This will be dealt with at another time — either a new caliper, or I can pull the valve out by carefully tapping it, etc.

Replaced the right side engine mount. I’m slowly working down the list of long term maintenance needs after completing all of the high priority items. The picture shows the old one sitting next to the partially installed new mount.

Are you building a drag car? Rally car?
This has been a track/rally car for years.
Really, I'm just slowly rebuilding it back to it's former glory. I regret selling my old half cage.

Today I changed the spark plugs in my V50 T5 with Bosch units I got from FCP Euro. It was super easy and thank god the spark plugs were not seized or a pain to get out. I hit them with a little PB Blaster beforehand for good measure.

Was a little saddened to see some of the old spark plugs had some oil on them. How concerned should I be? It doesn’t seem to burn or leak oil according to the dipstick and smell test. Car has 74,766 miles.

Also noticed this red goo from what I think is the top of the valve cover gasket? Can anyone comment on what this is?

Assuming you're not the original owner, it might of been oil leaked at one time from the old faulty valve cover gasket which probably was replaced by the previous owner. The red goo looks like some sealant used on the gasket
