can someone educate me on this? It seems like the only cars that causes understeers are FWD or FWD biased AWD but I know this isn't true since the Lamborghini Murcielago and Gallardo understeers too..... so what factors determines over/understeer?

Re: What causes Oversteer/Understeer??? (Volvo Guy)

Most car manufacterers design their cars to understeer, even RWD cars. Reason being is that understeer is easier to correct for the average driver while oversteer "scares" people and usually results in spinning out. This is because the average driver naturally applies brake when something goes wrong. While understeering, braking will usually correct the car, while oversteering braking will not.

How do they design the car to understeer? By putting more weight in the rear end of the car so it wouldn't oversteer? Is it possible to design a FWD oversteering car

All cars understeer

just attack a turn TOO fast and feel how the car want to go to the outside

Bad idea

Re: What causes Oversteer/Understeer??? (Volvo Guy)

A great and classic read for learning how to make your car go fast is by Denis Jenkinson: "The Racing Driver: the Theory and Practice of Driving Fast". Written back in the old RWD days, but provides a solid foundation for understanding the vehicle dynamics or weight transfer, under/oversteer, contact patches, and slip angles. Would the Jenks were alive today to write an updated version for cars like the R.

One end of the car starts to slide first and depending on the car, situation and driver inputs it could be either end.

FWD cars ask an awful lot of the front tires.

thx, I bet that's the Christmas spirit already around here.
Love the rawness of turbo-lag on those ones

I want a bigger turbo with a lot of boost

Yup, that's why BMW setup the e46 to understeer - they dialed some of it back a couple of years into the model lifecycle but it's still there.
