So, here is more or less what happened :
the spring mechanism in my key went a while ago, so the flip out key doesn't really stay anywhere, it just flops around. As a result, the part with the buttons hangs downward.
Tonight, I was driving home without shoes (they got soaked earlier), and was sitting a bit further up to the pedals. When I was coming to the first red light, my knee flipped the part of the key hanging down, and I noticed the headlights shut right off. Instinctively, I put it right back into ignition.
The car jerked forward a bit, gauges and headlights came back on, and it seemed ok... until I tried to change from 4th gear. (auto-stick, I should add)
I kept hitting down, and finally it went straight from 4th to 2nd... tried going back up, same thing, jumped to 4th. Went to D, and it stayed as "4"... same with neutral. Came to a stop, put in reverse and park, and the gauge display still read 4th gear.
I shut the car off, turned it back on, and everything seemed fine. Here's the part that concerns me now; Every time I let my foot off the gas, the car jerks. If I try to downshift to brake, or just let off the gas to slow down, it just seems to be jerking back a lot harder than before.

I'll have the car up on a hoist tomorrow anyways with the wheels off, checking out a few other things, and now this too.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The key just clicked back off of ignition to accessory, so the engine, gauges, and headlights shut off, but the radio stayed on.

I was less than 100 feet from a stop light, slowing down from maybe 50kmh at the very most.
I couldn't have been going anymore than 25kmh
and yes, I accidentally turned the car off while moving and in gear.
auto tranny, btw

well im sure you know, this is not good, basically the equivalent to throwing a wrench in some moving gears. that being said, i am not familiar with the safety and prevention technicians used by these cars.
i would say you might have tranny probs if your car is jerking now and wasnt before. maybe change the fluids. then anonymously call the dealer and say play it off like, "what happens if........"

I figured it wasn't the greatest thing to have happen... however, that being said, I'm sure that by this point, Volvo has put in some sort of safety feature to prevent any major damage.
Years ago, I had a 91 cavalier, and somehow managed to slam it into reverse at about 60kmh... it just shut off, took a second to start, and was fine from that point.

Oddly enough, the jerking i was feeling after the original problem I posted has subsided. The car feels fine, it's in for a post-lowering wheel alignment at the moment and seems to be running/shifting as fine as it ever was...
As long as I haven't much to worry about, the downpipe should be getting done within a month or so
