As Jessie and I were waiting at the exit line of the Ring in April, we wondered if the water temp gauge shows the actual water temp, or only goes over half way when something is way wrong. We both though that either the gauge is a Idiot light in dial form or otherwise the cooling system is damn effective. After a hard run I would think the water temp would creep over the noon position, especially when waiting in line to exit right after said hard run.
I tried a search, but don't think this has be presented before.
Thanks in advance!!

Re: Water Temp Gauge (Velvet_Jones)

Water Temp gauge in the car will go past the mid point when temp exceeds 120degC or 248degF, based on my Auterra readings. By then the oil temp would have exceeded 140degC or 284degF.

Re: Water Temp Gauge (blot)

rising old threads from the grave again....
what's the deal, I was thinking about this today....is our temp. gauge a joke from the designers? why waste that precious space if it's never going to tell you anything?
We've had ppl who blew engines b/c the damn gauge never moved, and it is useless to tell when the car is warm and full boost can be applied.
What's the point of having it? just because it looks pretty in blue?

Re: Water Temp Gauge (FEO)

So I guess the question would be - what would happen if one disconnected that gauge only and put the guts of an aftermarket water (or oil) temp gauge in it's place?

Otherwise the gauge would be going up and down all the time. They are set to read a certain position once temperature X is reached and only go north of that if it reaches X + Y degrees. If it's in between X and Y, it doesn't move.

Re: Water Temp Gauge (Needsdecaf)

The gauge reading about half-way seems the norm. I had my scan-tool plugged in and reading the coolant temp about 200F and the needle was just a hair below half. It's actually never really gone about that point, but if it does, I hope it won't be for long.

That would accomplish as much as the current gauge (or maybe even better since it gets immediate attention)

Water Temp Gauge (Toyota Style)

I get the prize for resurrecting the same thread twice
I just ran into this:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-ser....html
Toyota owners "hack" their clusters (by removing zener clamping diode) to get a true-to-temp gauge, rather than the useless binary gauge we have now
does anyone who has been back there (MigthyQ, AthruC?) know if this is doable, or are Rs way too "digital" for this type of trick
 ?

I have a OBD2 reader in mine and temp can go from 190-210 depending on driving and outside temps.
